Claire A.M. Daly

Hailed as one of the exciting new voices on the Scottish jazz scene, Irish singer Claire Daly takes a fresh approach to jazz singing.

As well as familiar favourites played in unfamiliar ways, sets can include anything from vocal takes on the music of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus or Miles Davis (to name a few); free improvisation over traditional folk melodies; and tunes sung in Italian, French, Portuguese or even Gaelic. More recent shows have seen her unveil some of her own compositions, with lyrics taking a tongue-in-cheek look at life... sung in the jazz language from the perspective of a thirtysomething who finds herself in a very similar but hugely different land...

As well as performing around Edinburgh, she has performed in the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the Glasgow Jazz Festival, and Pizza Express (Soho) in London. In 2007, she completed a 4-date tour of her native Ireland and performed 3 dates in Italy.

“Daly’s biggest strengths … lie in her ability to pick out a selection of lesser-known numbers and to wring emotion from them….she certainly appears capable of putting her stamp on a song…..Accompanied by a trio of adept musicians, she worked her way through a sophisticated set of numbers, peaking with a stunning rendition of Nena Simone’s classic number, ‘Wild in the Wind’. ” Edinburgh Evening News, July 15th 2004

“ Her voice and phrasing may bear traces of Sarah Vaughan, but the other influences on her are more contemporary and Daly's credibility as a jazz singer is greatly enhanced by her preparedness to interpret the instrumental repertoire as well as the great American songbook.” Cormac Larkin, Sunday Tribune (Ireland), May 8th, 2006
