Album Description

CROSSING CANADA In both 2016 and 2018 Dutch grammy award winners jazz singer Ineke Vandoorn & guitarist Marc van Vugt made a 5-week tour across Canada, traveling from east to west through the wide Canadian Prairies and over the Rocky Mountains. Having grown up in a tiny country like the Netherlands it is hard to have a concept of the vastness of Canada. Until you find yourself driving through it and the next exit on the highway happens to be 500 km away! The music and lyrics reflect the many travels we made and the people we met over the years in the flat land of the Dutch polders, in the French mountains and in the tropical rains of Bali. And, although touring can get pretty intense, sharing these stories with such a variety of audiences so far away from home felt very special. "She’s an adventurous, striking singer known for her intense, operatic range, her extreme precision and her warm vocals. He’s a composer and guitarist renowned for his enchanting arrangements and spellbinding improvisations. Together they create creative and accessible world class jazz, music to take you comfortably to places beyond the mundane. Their Dutch Grammy-winning music pushes the emotional and melodic boundaries of song, creating intimate landscapes with exciting bursts of fervor, flavoured with Brazilian choro and a fairytale-like Scandinavian vibe". Vandoorn and van Vugt have taken the duo playing to a different level. Seamlessly and effortlessly they are switching roles and by times you are wondering who is doing what. They explore the boundaries of both improvisation and lyrical songs, creating their own world, never losing their sense of lyricism and harmony; free as a bird playing their song"s. On 'Crossing Canada' we hear the duo. On 4 tracks they play with some of the best Canadian musicians: Mark Kelso (drs), Søren Nissen (cb) en Michael Occhipinti (guit). Some of the concerts were recorded live, though under simple circumstances. On this album we present a selection of these recordings, making you part of the precious moments we experienced while crossing Canada.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
