DR. DAVE FLIPPO has taught piano in Chicago's Northshore area since 1987, primarily at the former Swain Music Studios of Evanston, which mover to Winnetka in 2004. In that period he has taught beginners, intermediate and advanced students - tweens and teens as well as adults of all ages all looking to reconnect with music through the piano. He presently teaches from his home studio in Skokie - Dr. Flippo's Eclectic Piano Studio - and in the home throught the Northshore. Dave is also the Jazz Piano Instructor at the College of Lake County, where he has taught high school, college age and adult students since 1997.
DIVERSE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Dave Flippo holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Composition (Piano-major) from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Music in the same from the Eastman School of Music. He is a respected member of the Chicago jazz community- the leader of FLIPPOMUSIC, a jazz quintet that has performed and recorded in the Chicago area since 1992 on both Southport and Oppilf Records. He is also a former member of After Hours, a professional wedding band that performed all over the area in the 90's and 00's. His greatest test in improvisation
ECLECTIC, MODERN PIANO STUDIES: Though Dave does have several students that focus primarily on the classical repertoire, Mr. Flippo offers much more than the traditional fundamentals-note and
rhythmic reading and stylistic with a solid technique. His jazz and theory studies with Alan Swain and experience as both a jazz musician and professional commertial pianist allow him to teach basic theory and chording to his students, so that they can learn to create their own
arrangements, in any style they choose, be it popular/contemporary, jazz, blues or rock. Improvisation is also part of the lesson - from improvising on the blues to advanced jazz improvisation.
FUN AND CREATIVE: While learning the piano takes practice and the development of personal discipline is encouraged, lessons with Dave are fun - be it listening to the offbeat examples he comes up with to explain a concept, the silly pictures that cover the assignment sheet or the creative games both he and the student concoct to better learn a piece or a jazz phrase . Dave is always willing to create the music or arrangment of a favorite song to help heighten the student's interest in the lesson material.
LESSONS ALL OVER: Since the restructing of the Swain Studios, Dave has continued to serve his students in the Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmette, Evanston and Skokie area by teaching in the home.. He presently teaches weekdays and weekends, with Thursday held for his CLC lessons. He also offeres lessons at his Skokie studio: Dr. Flippo's Eclectic Piano Studio.and at the College of Lake County in Grayslake to both students and adults in the Grayslake Community.
occured when he and his bandmates performed with slam-poetry founder Marc Smith at the Green Mill and were called upon to create any style of music to back the poets that came on stage
PROFESSIONAL PIANIST: He presently continues to work commercially, primarily as a pianist, vocalist and small ensemble leader, booking "gigs" through various area agencies and with past clients. All of this experience gives him the ability to teach his students how to play in these many styles...rock, rhythm and blues, contemporary, jazz standards/Sinatra and blues.
Dave teaches primarily 45 and 60 minute lessons, usually with a regular, once a week slot.Contact him at 847 329-1837 (home), 847 567-1837 (cell) or email at [email protected]
