Dave Sharp Dave Sharp

Dave Sharp was born in Detroit, Michigan where he was inspired by the city’s rich musical heritage. While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and improvisation. This led to a move to San Francisco, where Dave studied with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis (McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderly, Les McCann) at the New College of California.

While living in San Francisco, Sharp performed in art spaces and venues like Cafe Du Nord and the Fillmore, and served as bassist and composer for the modern jazz ensemble the Spheres of Influence. After a brief tour of Japan, Sharp returned home to Michigan, where he continues to compose, record, engineer, teach and perform live in front of appreciative audiences.

Sharp brings both his upright and electric bass skills to a wide variety of music groups, including Dave Sharp's Secret 7 (World Jazz), Dave Sharp Worlds Trio, Three Worlds Trio, Sumkali (Indian Fusion), Klezmephonic (Traditional Klezmer), Wisaal (Arabic Fusion) as well as collaborating with Bollywood musicians (Parthiv Gohil, Jointa Gandhi) and touring Kirtan (Girish, Prema Hara) artists.

Sharp has been engineering and producing projects at Backseat Productions, a professional rec ording studio on the outskirts of Ann Arbor. With a wide range of music styles on his resume, which includes playing electric bass with The Melvins, and playing upright bass with Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Sharp has the experience to track your project and make it shine! Recent releases from the Backseat production mill include Dave Sharp Secret 7’s WORLDS and Kelzmephonic’s Ot Azoy! Student musicians thrive under Mr

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
