David's Angels

David’s Angels releases debut CD ”Substar” on Kopasetic Records, distributed through Naxos In a project where jazz, rock, minimalism, avant-garde influences the sound of the band, David’s Angels paints amazing soundscapes not easily branded. Prize-winning swedish composer-pianist Maggi Olin and vocalist Sofie Norling of Sweden, a new name with a big talent, created the music and lyrics that make up the ”Substar” CD. The theme of the set is of belonging, loss, sorrow and ambition., The musicians are born in the sixties, seventies and eighties and pulls from a diverse set of influences in creating this sound. Sofie Norling is a new graduate of Malmo Academy of Music, Sweden, and is quickly making a name for herself with a haunting beautiful voice and a intuitive and secure melodic performance. She is also in Nuaia and Quiet Nights Orchestra. Danish drummer-percussionist Michala Østergaard-Nielsen also performs with Marc Ducret and Lotte Anker. Her sense of dynamics and group sound plays an important role. Electric bassist David Carlsson uses vintage basses, effects and bow as requisites as well as a personal vision to create the bassparts to this music. He has a background in pop and rock bands like The Mopeds. Maggi’s fellow Berklee College of Music and long-time friend trumpeter Ingrid Jensen guests the recording on selected songs. Ingrid and Maggi has long had a strong musical rapport, latest on their cooperation in Nordic Connect with the release of ”Flurry” in 2007 and the very new release of Nordic Connect ”Spirals” 2010 both on ArtistShare. Another ArtistShare artist, Torben Waldorff, provided the title song for his new CD ”American Rock Beauty” here titled ”Stay For a While”

David's Angels: Traces

David Angel Big Band: Camshafts and Butterflies

Like the proverbial tree falling in an empty forest, if a big band plays but no one hears it, does it still make a sound? That's basically the story of the David Angel Big Band, which has been rehearsing nearly every week for well-nigh half a century but has been heard by almost no one until now. Angel, a saxophonist / arranger who has made a good living for many years “ghost-writing" music for television and films and teaching composition ...

David's Angels: What It Seems

David's Angels creates stimulating sonic landscapes out of a unique fusion of various genres. Although electric bassist David Carlsson is the nominal leader of this innovative Danish-Swedish quartet and the producer of its second release, What It Seems, the album's signature sound is built around singer Sofie Norling's haunting delivery and incandescent tone. Norling not only penned all the lyrics, she also composed the music on this dark-hued paean to love's demise, together with keyboardist Maggi Olin. The melancholic ...

David's Angels: What It Seems

The Swedish quartet David's Angels has proven in its debut release, Substar (Kopasetic, 2010), its ability to encompass emotionally charged issues with expressive, storytelling musical articulations. The sophomore release puts this approach in a more demanding test. What It Seems chronicles the demise of a meaningful love affair and its protagonist, singer-songwriter Sofie Norling making the peace process with its emotional implications-- the feeling of betrayal, loneliness, anger but also the needed sense of liberation. Norling's songs ...

David's Angels: Substar

David's Angels is the debut release of a Swedish outfit featuring young singer/songwriter Sofie Norling and composer/pianist Maggi Olin. It is a beautiful eight song-cycle focused on troubled relationship--belonging, sorrow and letting go--that travels into a deeply emotional and sonic journey. Norling has a clear, warm, angel-like voice that can soar into the upper registers, and always suggests close intimacy. Olin, together with Danish drummer Michala Østergaard-Nielsen, electric bassist David Carlsson and guest trumpeter Ingrid Jensen (Olin's ...
