Canadian vocalist Deanne Matley has come into her own. The spring 2018 release of Because I Loved, recorded with well-known Montreal talent including vocalist Ranee Lee and drummer Jim Doxas, marks a clear departure for the Calgary native. Her previous four albums, with songs ranging from jazz standards to pop covers and Christmas favourites, have garnered her Top 10 radio play across Canada and fans around the world, but Because I Loved is something more special and personal to the bilingual chanteuse. “This is the album I have dreamt of making,” says Deanne of the emotion-driven combination of original songs and exquisite, heartfelt jazz and pop covers.
A singer since she was a child, Deanne studied at the Berklee College of Music, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Stanford Jazz Institute both before and after launching her career as a jazz vocalist. She is the singer for Calgary’s Prime Time Big Band, and performs with combos both in Calgary and in Montréal, her second home.
Deanne has performed at jazz festivals in Canada and France, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia as part of Canada’s contribution to the Giant Steppes of Jazz festival, and has shared the stage with greats including Tommy Banks and trombonist Al Kay. She’s looking forward to touring both across Canada and internationally after the release of Because I Loved.
“Deanne is what the world is waiting for.” Ranee Lee, renowned Canadian jazz vocalist
