Denis DiBlasio

After receiving his Master's Degree from The University of Miami, Denis DiBlasio joined the big band of legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, serving as Maynard’s Musical Director for five years. During this time he honed his virtuosity on the baritone saxophone and flute as well as a prodigious scat-vocal technique, and developed estimable composing / arranging skills. His scores have been published by Kendor, William Allen, Kjos, Doug Beach, Hal Leonard. Houston, Jamey Aebersold and Roncorp Publications. He is currently Director of the Jazz Program at Rowan University, conducts Rowan’s Lab Band and holds the seat as the Executive Director of The Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz Studies at Rowan.

As a clinician for the Yamaha Musical Corporation, DiBlasio has taught, performed and conducted all over the United States; his“education as entertainment”style has also taken him to Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Japan and Thailand. His unique combination of positive motivation and witty sense of humor ensures an atmosphere where making music is fun”and students are encouraged by his fearless risk taking attitude that communicates the message: “Mistakes are valid…if you learn something in the attempt.”

This approach keeps Denis extremely busy, in constant demand and often booked up to a year and a half to two years in advance.

Denis uses Vandoren products.

The Denis DiBlasio Quintet's new CD release, "Where the Jade Buddha Lives", on Art of Life Records will be available in stores and as a digital download on March 18, 2008. The CD is also available now from Art of Life Records web site at www.artofliferecords.com

The CD features Denis DiBlasio on baritone saxophone and flute, Ron Thomas on piano, Joe Mullen on drums, Paul Klinefelter on acoustic bass and Jim McFalls on trombone.

Ed Vezinho / Jim Ward: Live From the Jersey Pines

Read "Live From the Jersey Pines" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

The Pineys. The Jersey Devil. The flyover country between Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Jersey Shore. None of these are entirely flattering descriptions or features of the great wooded expanse that extends over much of South Jersey, but, as they say, it is what it is. Of course, the residents of the big cities that surround the Jersey Pines also know there are plenty of good musicians and places to play as well. That is nothing new, but sometimes proximity to ...

Denis DiBlasio Quintet: Where the Jade Buddha Lives

Read "Where the Jade Buddha Lives" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

As a former member/musical director of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's band, baritone saxophonist Denis DiBlasio is certainly no stranger to mapping out music and following charts. But he also has an adventurous streak, one in which the slightest of frameworks is laid down--maybe just a mood suggested or, perhaps even, a single note brought up as the basis for a mood--and the musicians are allowed free reign within these loose architectures.Of course the right musicians need to be picked; ...

Denis DiBlasio: View from Pikes

Read "View from Pikes" reviewed by Victor L. Schermer

Originally released in 2006, this “sleeper" of an album may not contain breathtaking breakthroughs, but it's so good for what it does that it deserves attention. View from Pikes provides consistent listening pleasure from start to finish. The absence of drums actually facilitates the sweet, laidback playing of the Denis DiBlasio/Steve Varner/Jim Ridl trio, which maintains the pulse quite well. DiBlasio did five years as Music Director with Maynard Ferguson, was a prime mover at the late, great Ortliebs Jazzhaus ...
