Adam Cohen
A true "double-threat" on both acoustic & electric bass, Adam brings a wealth of musical knowledge and musicianship stemming from his many years on stage, in the studio, as a teacher, and on the road. His prowess on both basses has led Cohen to work with the likes of Ray Charles, Taylor Dayne, The New York Voices, Engelbert Humperdinck, David Benoit, Ernie Watts, Maxine Nightingale, Phil Upchurch, Eric Benet, and Mark Isham. In every situation, he brings along his easily recognized strong yet flexible groove, warm clear sound, and lyrical improvisations.
Hailing from Queens, New York (L.A. would come soon after when the Cohen family moved to California), Adam's musical foundation was built upon the piano lessons introduced to him at the age of six by his father Irwin, himself an accomplished piano player & composer. However, the lure of the low end would soon come calling via the sounds of Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beatles, Chicago, Tower of Power, and Stanley Clarke. The influences of Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, and Dave Holland soon followed and lessons on both the upright and electric bass commenced.
Fast forward to present day and we find Adam as not only a ubiquitous presence on the L.A. scene, but a leader in his own right with two albums - Gig Bag (1994), Ritual (2005) - and many compositions to his credit. With "big ears", a sturdy groove, and the desire to make a positive impact on the musical situation at hand, Adam continues to move forward and reach upward.
