Arp: The Soft Wave

Read "The Soft Wave" reviewed by John Kelman

Documentary: Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Documentary: Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Sister Rosetta Tharpe began recording on the electric guitar in 1941, for her first Decca sides with Lucky Millinder's band. At this point in time, hundreds of thousands of black Americans were on the move, leaving the farms of the South and Southwest for better-paying manufacturing jobs up North and out West, where blacks' lives weren't at the same level of risk. Since ...

“In April 2022, I was about to perform in Brooklyn for the first time since the pandemic. Offering a solo set didn't excite me much, so I invited my avant-garde jazz-wizard friend, Harvey Valdes, who had just released his superb recording of Bach’s lute works on the electric guitar. To complete the trifecta, I reached out to downtown legend, experimental guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp, whom I have been a fan of for many years and recently reconnected with. ...

Toni Harper, a child singer in Los Angeles in the late 1940s who grew up to become a superb jazz stylist in the mid-1950s and early 1960s, recorded with Oscar Peterson, Buddy Bregman, Marty Paich and many other leading jazz artists only to quit the business at age 29, died on February 10. The Great Depression soon followed, and Sharp’s parents sent him to live with relatives in Los Angeles while they went to New York to seek their ...

From the cosmos the Eulipion vibration sprung forth on the planet. Beings of light, love and creativity brought new sounds and healing to earth, “a duty-free gift for the traveler."
