Asdrubal

Originally Formed as a quartet in 2002, the present sextet ASDRUBAL adventures seeking new ways to express the music of the Banda Pelayera and chirimia (traditional folkloric formats from the different coasts of Colombia). Articulating their music with a variety of elements from everyday urban sonorities " spontaneous improvisation, rock, free, jazz, punk, minimalism, amongst others, Asdrubal offers a fortunate meeting ground for two different, apparently irreconcilable musical languages: the traditionally folkloric and the contemporary.

The band has dedicated its time to composing original music and has stood out due to their live performances in important festivals, theatres and concert halls in the national circuit. It is important to recognize the following as some of their most important: Teatro Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, where the band interpreted “Con Traste”, piece that led one of their integrants to receive a mention of honor for participating in a competition offered by IDCT (Instituto Distrital de Cultura y Turismo), “Urban Popular Music Composition” (2002); Teatro de Cristóbal Colón, where they were invited to participate in the National Culture Awards 2003 (Ministerio de Cultura). They interpreted the piece “San Pedro”, composition selected as first finalist in the IV Colombo-franc Awards as Cultural Patrimony, prize handed out by the Ministry of Culture and the French Embassy; Auditorio Teresa Cuervo Borda (National Museum of Colombia), 7th University Jazz Festival (2003), Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, Auditorio León de Greiff, amongst others.

They were selected to participate in the convocations of the IDCT for two consecutive years (2004 & 2005), and were candidates for a Mention of Honor for the composition “La Revuelta”. Asdrubal was Chosen to participate in the VIII Festival de Jazz EAFIT in Medellin, where they shared a stage with recognized international musicians like: Ed Simon, Fernando Tarres, Ernesto Jodos y Jerónimo Carmona.

During 2005 the band was selected, along with some of the most important national Bands, to participate in the Festival de Fusion organized by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia; that same year the were invited to play in the circuit Ciclo Colón Electrónico (ciclo de eventos sonoros y visuales contemporáneos). Along with this came a special mention in the international convocation of the IV Festival Jazz Granada in Spain.

In 2006 the bands participation in the festival “Talento Fresco en el Atico” is considered outstanding. The event took place in the Sala Mallarino of the Teatro Crtistobal Colon de Bogota along with some of the most representative bands of the denominated “New Colombian Music”.
