Bryan Beninghove

Bryan Beninghove is a NY/NJ based saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. As a composer and bandleader, he performs in a wide array of diverse musical styles - all fantastically pleasant on the ears and mind.

Beninghoveʼs latest release, “Beninghoveʼs Hangmen”; an eclectic collection of “creeptastic grinder-jazz”; placed number three on Lucid Cultureʼs list of the Top 25 Jazz Albums of 2011. His first release, “Organ Trio”, an album of rollicking B3 “grits and gravy” earned a nod from the Village Voice as a top pick of 2009. As a composer, his music has been heard on Comedy Central, Bravo, and IFC.

Originally from Westminster, MD, Bryan started playing the saxophone at age 10 and took his first bad solo in a bar at age 12. Moving to Baltimore at 18, he fell in love with the blues and organ jazz clubs, as well as the local rock scene. Bryan completed his education at William Paterson University (NJ) in 1999, and then moved to NYC.

Currently Bryan resides in Jersey City. There he performs regularly with the french gypsy jazz band Manouche Bag, leads the nine piece corporate band Soul Connection NYC, and can be heard with his Hangmen and Organ Trio as well as free-lancing with top NYC musicians.

Read "Organ Trio" reviewed by Woodrow Wilkins

Bryan Beninghove puts a different spin on the jazz trio. Instead of piano or guitar with bass and drums, he heads sax-organ-drums combo. It makes for an interesting, off-the-beaten-path recording, aptly titled Organ Trio.Saxophonist/composer Beninghove hails from the Baltimore suburb of Westminster, Md. He has performed with such musicians as Rufus Reid, Jamey Haddad and many others. When he's not performing, he can be often found giving private lessons, putting on clinics, running ensembles or leading a jazz ...

Bryan Beninghove: Organ Trio

Read "Organ Trio" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Organ Trio is Jersey City saxophonist/composer and bandleader Bryan Beninghove's debut self-titled album with his very able organ trio that performs regularly throughout the Jersey City/New York area. A rather busy band leader, Beninghove also leads the six-piece Big in Jersey light ensemble and the Bryan Beninghove & Hangmen Quintet. But it is his Organ Trio group with which he has chosen to devote much of his time resulting in the release of this, their first recording.

"best debut album of 2011 by a longshot." - New York Music Daily

"If Marc Ribot’s noir stuff is your kind of thing, Beninghove’s Hangmen are heaven. They call their music “creeptastic grinder jazz for the masses,” which is an understatement. Creepy, chromatic B&W movie tunes; a shot of gypsy punk; a hit of klezmer hash; a blast of surf music; a bite of punk jazz; a dash of ska…and the chase is on!...

It’s hard to keep track of all the great albums that have come out this year, but this has to be one of the ten best." - New York Music Daily

"Bryan Beninghove and crew assemble an exciting set of contemporary straight-ahead jazz that leaves quite an impression. It's a debut of tasteful music that can be appreciated by casual listeners and a discerning jazz audience."
