Carlos Garnett

Carlos Garnet - tenor sax

Carlos Garnet who hails from Panama, is a solid tenor man with top credentials who made his biggest impact in the late '60s and 1970s, when he was heard on recordings by Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Andrew Hill and Norman Connors. Garnett slipped into a dormant period in the 1980s but made a strong comeback in the following decade.

Garnet relocated to the Houston area in 1990 started a new band and set out releasing some fine records as “Fuego En Mi Alma,” (’96) “Under Nubian Skies,” (’99) and “Moon Shadow” in 2001.

Since then he has remained active performing and is sometimes accompanied by his daughter Myra. He is quite the jazz star in Panama where he recently appeared at the Panama Jazz Festival.

Roy Brooks: Understanding

Read "Understanding" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

"Down & Up Again," an original outing on “Giant Steps" changes from Carlos Garnett's Under Nubian Skies, is as apt a description of the fiery saxophonist's life as it is a testament to the new found heights of his artistry following a two-decade absence, during which he suffered in the depths of depression and drug addiction. These days he is making music at his highest level ever, with every note speaking to the spiritual awakening that revitalized him.Born ...

Carlos Garnett: Under Nubian Skies

Read "Under Nubian Skies" reviewed by Bob Margolis

“Under Nubian Skies" is a swinging, well played record that shows Carlos Garnett dipping heavily into his Coltrane bag and Panamanian roots. Garnett, a legendary tenor man who is returning to performing after a self imposed exile has done stints with Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, Charles Mingus, Pharoah Saunders, and perhaps most notably as part of Miles's groundbreaking groups of the early 1970's.

Sometimes a breath of fresh air replenishes the desire and the ability to keep doing ...
