Chris Tordini

Chris Tordini is rapidly becoming an in-demand bassist in New York's creative music community. He graduated from the New School University in May 2006 and soon after was asked to join Dapp Theory and play on the band's upcoming CD. While attending school, Tordini performed professionally with a number of his teachers, including Rory Stuart, Ari Hoenig, George Garzone, and Andy Milne. He has also performed with some of today's most compelling musicians, including Dafnis Prieto, Mark Shim, John Ellis, and Rich Perry. Tordini performs frequently with other talented, like-minded young musicians like Mike Pinto, Tommy Crane, Logan Richardson, Frank Locrasto, Greg Ruggiero, Collin Killalea, Tyshawn Sorey, and Becca Stevens, all of whom lead their own bands and are determined to make their mark.

Caroline Davis’ Alula: Captivity

Read "Captivity" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Fisiologicamente marcata ...

The Choir Invisible with Charlotte Greve, Vinnie Sperrazza and Chris Tordini: Town of Two Faces

Read "Town of Two Faces" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Infused with an inventive and organic zest, Town of Two Faces swings into the spotlight under the deft ensemble of Charlotte Greve on alto saxophone or voice, Vinnie Sperrazza on drums, Chris Tordini on acoustic bass. It is graced by a cameo from Fay Victor, a voice which paints jazz in bold uncharted colors, with her knack for reimagining the vocal weave in the jazz tapestry with her deep dive into a memorably melodic blues-and gospel-shaded piece, entitled “In Heaven." ...

Stephane Payen / Ingrid Laubrock / Chris Tordini / Tom Rainey: All Set

Read "All Set" reviewed by John Sharpe

All Set rekindles an alliance dating back to 2002 in London, where French saxophonist Stéphane Payen and German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock first collaborated. Though they kept in touch in the meantime, this 2019 studio date represents their only encounter since. Between times Laubrock has blossomed, becoming one of the leading lights on the New York community, while Payen has consolidated his place on the French scene, working with bands such as Thôt and The Workshop. Joining them for this session ...

Stéphane Payen, Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Tordini, Tom Rainey: All Set

Read "All Set" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The contrasts heard on All Set are both its center and its strength. The music, contributed by saxophonists Stéphane Payen (straight alto saxophone) and Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone) is inspired by Milton Babbitt's third stream serial composition “All Set" which was performed in 1957. While that piece was through- composed, these nine compositions stand out for the quartet's ability to balance composition with improvisation. This quartet finds the long-time partners Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey collaborating with ...

Charlotte Greve / Vinnie Sperrazza / Chris Tordini: The Choir Invisible

Read "The Choir Invisible" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

The music on The Choir Invisible, presented by the musical equilateral triangle of saxophonist Charlotte Greve, drummer Vinnie Sperrazza and bassist Chris Tordini, presents the ear with a simple yet often intense beauty. Three strong sonic personalities exploring uncluttered territory. The trio, all of whom are busy members of the New York City jazz scene, formed their The Choir Invisible in 2017. This eponymous album is their first recording. When the subject of an alto sax, bass and ...

Chris Speed Trio: Respect for your Toughness

Read "Respect for your Toughness" reviewed by Vic Albani

Chris Tordini Trio, featuring Becca Stevens and Greg Ruggerio: Midnight Sun

Read "Midnight Sun" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

The vinyl-only subscription label, Newvelle Records, enters the second half of its second season with the Chris Tordini Trio collection, Midnight Sun. Bassist Tordini is joined by vocalist Becca Stevens and guitarist Greg Ruggiero on a set of standards bookended by Ornette Coleman covers. The readings here are stripped of any superfluous trappings, allowing the individual performances to stand on their own merits. Tordini is a much-in-demand bassists having worked with pianist Tigran Hamasyan, John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet, ...

Just Released: "Clockworks" (Songlines Recordings) Featuring Patrick Zimmerli Quartet with Ethan Iverson, Chris Tordini, John Hollenbeck

Source: AMT Public Relations

Completing a 25-year compositional arc, saxophonist-composer Patrick Zimmerli releases his new jazz suite Clockworks (Songlines) following the release in 2016 of his first quartet’s 1992 recording Shores Against Silence (with Kevin Hays, Larry Grenadier and Tom Rainey). Both records feature rhythmically and melodically advanced composition largely inspired by Zimmerli’s love of serial composers such as Babbitt, Carter, Stockhausen and Boulez, though still grounded in a jazz ethos. Both explore a different third stream direction in jazz that Zimmerli made his ...
