Chuck Gottesman

Chuck Gottesman is one of the most active trumpet players in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. His ability to perform with expertise in many styles has made him first-call with many area bandleaders and brides-to-be. The press has called Gottesman “a monster … his flugelhorn playing is as warm as Art Farmer’s, while his trumpet playing seems to sizzle with a different set of ideas.” As an undergraduate at Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music, Gottesman was a student of famed trumpeter and educator Seymour Rosenfeld. Mr. Rosenfeld encouraged all of his students to be well- rounded trumpet players, so Mr. Gottesman performed in the university’s Symphony Orchestra as well as lead trumpet in the Jazz Band.

In 1992, Mr. Gottesman was selected by a nationwide audition for the Walt Disney World All-American College Show Band, an 8-piece ensemble that performed daily shows with the Disney Characters and The Best of Disney dancers, as well as weekly concerts with guest artists including Arturo Sandoval, Red Rodney, Marvin Stamm, Bob Mintzer, Tom Scott, Pete Christlieb, and Jiggs Whigham. Mr. Gottesman was asked to return in 1993 as the leader of the ensemble. Although he maintains an active career as a trumpet player, Mr. Gottesman shares his love of music as an educator. Since 1995, Mr. Gottesman has been the Director of Instrumental Music at Springfield Township High School in Erdenheim, Pennsylvania.

In 2005, Mr. Gottesman completed his Master of Music at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. As a graduate student in the Maynard Ferguson Institute of Jazz Studies, Mr. Gottesman studied trumpet with the great George Rabbai and arranging and composition with revered educator Denis DiBlasio. In January 2006, Mr. Gottesman released a CD entitled “My Hard Luck Story (and other tales of woe)” with Dreambox Media, Philadelphia’s premiere jazz label. The disc is a collection of 12 original compositions and arrangements that Mr. Gottesman put together while completing his Master’s at Rowan.

However, his flugelhorn playing is as warm as Art Farmer's, while his trumpet playing seems to sizzle with a different set of ideas, and that's rare in itself. In addition, his skills as an arranger are exceptional. Check out his work on Black Sabbath's “War Pigs," a choice that will presumably have the happy effect of ...
