Ellen Doty

Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Her music incorporates everything from jazz to soul, folk, pop and indie music: a sound that is uniquely hers. A true storyteller whose works are as intimate and as personal as their handwritten lyrics, Ellen’s immense talent for songwriting is only complemented by her stunning vocals. Originally from Okotoks, AB, she currently makes her home in Calgary.

Her debut album “Gold” reached the top ten on the college jazz radio charts in Canada, and she followed up the release with a crowd-funded, self-booked 40 stop Canadian tour. In the past year, Doty has continued to tour extensively in Canada. She had the opportunity to open for two-time Grammy-winner Gregory Porter, and recently completed a concert theatre tour with award-winning saxophonist Eli Bennett from Vancouver. Doty was recently named one of the top 35 under 35 jazz artists in Canada by CBC Music along with BadBadNotGood, Larnell Lewis, Nikki Yanosky, and more: “With an honesty and warmth that sets her apart from so many artists, Doty is an emerging Canadian talent who is clearly one to watch for 2017 and beyond.”

Doty signed a record deal with Toronto-based label Alma Records, and her new album will come out on Universal Music in Canada on March 2nd, 2018 with a Canadian tour to follow.

Calgary's Ellen Doty drops her second LP March 2. Come Fall is a stripped-down collection of gorgeous jazz pop that features Doty on vocals, Davide Di Renzo on drums and Mark Lalama on piano. The absence of bass, horns and all the rest was an inspired choice. Doty, whose crystal-clear voice must be heard to be believed, talked with me about how he album became a trio project, opening for Gregory Porter and working with songwriting partners Justin ...

CALGARY SINGER-SONGWRITER ELLEN DOTY TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM GOLD ON MAY 29, 2014 SINGLE & VIDEO LAUNCH “NO GOOD MAN” ON JUNE 11, 2014 “Doty’s talents, both as a vocalist and a songwriter, allow her to effortlessly marry her jazz side with a more polished contemporary approach that pulls from blue-eyed soul and hand-clap pop. The result is not only widespread appeal — from purists to those with an aversion — but a sound that’s truly unique.” Mike Bell, Calgary ...

“Anyone involved in the music scene knows that Ellen Doty is one of the hardest-working, talented artists on the scene. Her voice is soft, sweet, confident and assured, and combines her deep love of jazz with the influences of the great singer-songwriters of our time. With an honesty and warmth that sets her apart from so many artists, Doty is an emerging Canadian talent who is clearly one to watch for 2017 and beyond. “ CBC Music, Top Canadian Jazz Musicians Under 35 List (June 2017)

“Whether she was offering a new song (Passing Mile), a personal, heartfelt ballad (Just So You Know) or a standard (I’ve Got You Under My Skin), Doty displayed grace in full measure. She can interpret a song in captivating fashion, or prove she’s capable and measures deep in the genre with a mashup of her own Say You Will combined with the timeless Stand By Me. A young artist to watch, given she’s only one full-length album into her career..” Dan St. Yves, Calgary Herald, Live Performance Review, David Myles Double Bill (April 2016)
