Flow Trio: Set Theory, Live At The Stone

Read "Set Theory, Live At The Stone" reviewed by John Sharpe

Recorded live at NYC's The Stone, Set Theory constitutes the third release by Flow Trio, following its excellent studio set, Rejuvenation (ESP, 2009) and an earlier live disc, like this one, on Ayler Records. An appropriate home for this band, as it happens, for the legendary Albert Ayler looms large in Flow Trio mainstay, saxophonist Louie Belogenis' personal pantheon, alongside John Coltrane. Though undersung as a unit, the trio's joint pedigree is impressive, covering a galaxy of free jazz talent: ...

Flow Trio: Rejuvenation

Read "Rejuvenation" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

The tenor saxophone raises a lonesome voice heralding a new beginning. It evokes a melody that is shaped exquisitely by Louie Belogenis, who gives it a striking presence. Flow Trio: Rejuvenation

Read "Rejuvenation" reviewed by John Sharpe

Rejuvenation, despite its more recent vintage, fits right in with the generally held notion of the ESP label in its heyday as a home to passionate, small group, free jazz blowing sessions. In the hands of masters that makes for more cohesive, fully formed and nuanced results. And the three ...

Flow Trio: Rejuvenation

Read "Rejuvenation" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

If there is a way--and there most certainly is--to feel music with all the senses, then Flow Trio, comprising saxophonist Louie Belogenis, bassist Joe Morris and percussionist Charles Downs, show how completely spectacular this can feel when it all comes together on a record such as Rejuvenation. The group, all seriously schooled in the poetics of sound, have literally mastered the way to fully explore the sound dynamic of saxophone, bass and drum, vertically- -for harmonic depth--and ...

Flow Trio, "Set Theory" Live at the Stone, Sounding Better Than Ever

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

The Flow Trio do that. Flow. They flow in a free manner. They flow because each player sets up the other players with what he does, allowing them to invent fertile extended collective improvisations. You can hear that at great length on their Set Theory: Live at the Stone (Ayler CD-107). Drummer Charles Downs flows in the density and speed of his free-timing, both creating momentum and responding to it. Joe Morris as bassist is ideal for this sort of ...
