Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet: Diablo en Brooklyn

Read "Diablo en Brooklyn" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

First, it's his first Sextet release completely recorded in Peru. Second, it reprises in-concert versions of band originals released on previous albums plus a twelve-minute hothouse expedition through the Gershwins' “Summertime," interspersed with a four-movement “Brooklyn Suite" loosely based on the “Son de los Diablos" tradition where mock devils parade through the streets of ...

Afro-Peruvian Jazz Music is the life’s work of trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría. For the past 15 years, he has led a cross-cultural ensemble called the Afro-Peruvian Sextet that has slowly (but surely) placed Afro-Peruvian Jazz Music on the international musical map. Alongside his principal collaborators Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón (percussion), Laura Andrea Leguía (saxophones), and Hugo Alcázar (drums), the Afro-Peruvian Sextet has to date produced seven CDs, one vinyl, and one documentary film. On the band’s latest effort, Social Distancing, ...
