Guy Mintus

For Guy Mintus, it’s not the what but the why that goes behind a musical gesture. This outlook, along with his multicultural and highly spontaneous approach, allows him to tap into a dimension of raw emotion in his music. Guy’s piano sound can often resemble a Turkish Kanun, a Flamenco guitar, a Jazz Big Band or a Jewish cantor. “Guy is mad scientist” proclaimed Grammy winning artist Arturo O’Farrill, “none does it like him”. Usually enhanced by his own singing voice, his performances have been described as “keeping the entire hall with held breath” (Barka Fabianova, Full Moon Zine Magazine).

Whether he’s sharing the stage with jazz legends, composing for classical orchestras, collaborating with masters of traditional music, or working with kids, Guy feels at home. The Israeli pianist, coming from a mixed heritage of Iraqi, Moroccan & Polish Jews, is a true citizen of the world. He has been NY based for the past five years while constantly on the go, having recently presented his music in Brazil, India, Turkey, throughout Europe, the US, and Canada.

Guy’s awards include the Prix du Public at the Montreux Jazz Festival’s solo piano competition, and two of ASCAP’s “Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards”, as well as full scholarships to Berklee College of Music and to the Manhattan School of Music, from where he graduated. His debut Trio record, “A Home in Between” was chosen as DownBeat Magazine’s editor’s pick and led to an invitation of the group to perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center, NY.

At 26, he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Jon Hendricks, Trilok Gurto, Pastora Glavan, Maalem Hassan Benjaafer, and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, as well as the renowned ska-punk band, Streetlight Manifesto with whom he performed as a soloist in front of a sold-out Beacon Theater.

Guy has been commissioned to compose music by the American Composers Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Jerusalem East & West Orchestra (formerly known as the Andalusian Orchestra), the Imani Chamber Winds Festival, Allumer Horn Quartet, and the Schwarz Foundation. In 2018 he will perform Rhapsody in Blue with the Bayerische Philharmonic as well as his own full-length work for the Israeli Chamber Orchestra inspired by the journey of the Jews of Arab origins immigrating to Israel in its early days.

Guy is also a passionate educator having taught workshops in numerous situations, from the Royal Conservatory of Madrid to mid-western US universities to Refugee Camps around Europe.

Guy Mintus Trio: A Gershwin Playground

Read "A Gershwin Playground" reviewed by Troy Dostert

"Go big or go home" might as well be Guy Mintus' mantra. The Israeli pianist has a forceful presence on his instrument, and he seemingly brings every ounce of talent and creativity he possesses to every record he releases. His debut trio album, A Home In Between (Self-Produced, 2017), was a terrific amalgam of styles, showcasing Mintus' distinctive blend of bop, classical and global folk idioms. On A Gershwin Playground, he brings his fearsome technique and chameleon-like stylistic approach to ...

Guy Mintus Trio: A Home In Between

Read "A Home In Between" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Although he's only 25, pianist Guy Mintus has already forged a musical vision well beyond his years. And he's got sensational chops to match it, as A Home In Between makes clear. It's an outstanding piano trio disc, with a compelling hybrid of styles that includes bop, classical and Israeli and Eastern European folk influences. There seemingly isn't anything Mintus can't tackle, and it is impressive that he succeeds as often as he does on this exciting debut recording.
