Ilaria Capalbo / Stefano Falcone

The collaboration between bassist and composer Ilaria Capalbo and pianist/composer Stefano Falcone is a work in progress, evolving since the pair met during studies and as their careers took shape, bringing Ilaria to Sweden and Stefano to Italy. The duo works on original compositions, co-writing and free improvisation, leading the tiny ensemble towards a distinctive, chamber-like sound that well represents the musicians' respective backgrounds and experiences. With this project, Stefano and Ilaria were featured as Artists In Residence for two years in a row at JazzIt Fest, a yearly event organized by Italy’s most prominent jazz magazine. Their debut album, Invisible Atlas, traces a geographical and emotional path, a thread woven between the northernmost and southernmost edges of Europe, between written and improvised music. It keeps branching out to reach new musicians and new territories.

Ilaria Capalbo is an Italian double bass player, cellist and composer based in Stockholm, Sweden. She has worked extensively both as a performer and a composer in the last few years, sharing the stage with international artists such as Norma Winstone and Chihiro Yamanaka and writing music for projects of her own and involving institutions such as KMH and Nobel Museum. She is trained in classical music yet an incessant explorer of the deeply creative musical outbound that is jazz. Her compositions are strongly linked to her background and reflect the willingness to create a bridge the two musical worlds she inhabits.

Stefano Falcone is a classically trained pianist and composer based in Naples, Italy. He works both as a performer, composer and a bandleader and is active in several ensembles which vary in character and inclination. A versatile and sought-after professional, he has so far performed on many national stages and jazz clubs. In the last year he has been busy with a duo record, a recording for piano solo published by seminal label Solitunes and a collaboration with the production studio M.I.L.K. that was promoted on Downbeat. His compositions reflect a strong connection with his geographical origins and inner territories, exploring concepts such as longing, memory, sense of belonging.

Such rapport is the theme of Invisible Atlas by two Neapolitan jazz musicians, pianist Stefano Falcone and bassist Ilaria Capalbo. Both have studied in Sweden and absorbed that certain Scandinavian jazz accent to accompany their Italian folk roots. The eight tracks that make up this recording are ...

– Adam D'Amato
