Born in Ardrew, Athy Ireland. Began music lessons on piano but gave up due to aggressive attitude of teacher, who was a knuckle-rapper. Took up clarinet in university (self-taught) inspired by Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet and by the revival of traditional jazz that was the taking place in Europe.Then heard Lester Young & Billie Holiday (on recordings.) Took up tenor saxophone in 1963. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1971. Spent a few years in Victoria, Australia (2001-'06). Played with various groups in the South Gippsland area. Returned to NZ 2006. Playing in the Northland region.

Awards

Composition "After the Rain" won prize at Original Tunes Competition of the Australian Jazz Convention at Stawell in 2004.
