Carlo Mombelli: Lullaby for Planet Earth

Read "Lullaby for Planet Earth" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Carlo Mombelli's patience is profound. Long a believer in allowing music to unfold at its own pace, the veteran South African bassist/composer demonstrates incredible composure in his every pursuit. Always unforced and forever bound to both the natural and spiritual realms, his art reflects a purity linking the concepts of self- command and surrender. In that respect, in using his own unique voice, he speaks to universal hope and possibilities. There's already plenty of evidence to support ...

Jakob Bro, Joe Lovano: Once Around the Room - A Tribute To Paul Motian

Read "Once Around the Room - A Tribute To Paul Motian" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Jakob Bro / Joe Lovano: Once Around the Room

Read "Once Around the Room" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

The thrumming double basses of Larry Grenadier and Thomas Morgan initiate the conversation. Then the scattered insistence of rhythm by drummers Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy enters, pushing Once Around the Room into consciousness with all the anticipation and hushed intent of an orchestra tuning before a performance. Airy clusters of guitar courtesy of Jakob Bro and electric bassist Anders Christensen introduce Joe Lovano's aching call summoning the spirit to make known “As It Should Be," the first of the ...

A Different Drummer, Pt. 6: Iberian Beats – Jorge Rossy & Pedro Melo Alves

Read "A Different Drummer, Pt. 6: Iberian Beats – Jorge Rossy & Pedro Melo Alves" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

The music of the Iberian Peninsula is as rich and diverse as any in the world. Its influences are many yet it developed in the pre-global bubble of geography. Early music of the peninsula was impacted by much of the known world in the primeval period and the Middle Ages. The peninsula was isolated by the Pyrenees Mountains effectively blocking off modern Spain and Portugal from the rest of Europe but cultural aspects of the Roman Empire, Turkic tribes, and ...

Jakob Bro: Uma Elmo

Read "Uma Elmo" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

After a break of a few years, Danish guitarist & composer Jakob Bro returns to ECM Records with a new trio. Bay Of Rainbows (ECM Records, 2018) was a live recording documenting his trio with double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron, while Returnings (ECM Records, 2018) was a quartet reuniting Bro with Morgan and drummer Jon Christensen (who had played on his ECM debut) plus trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg. The sound here almost splits the difference; Bro is joined ...

Sam Braysher Trio: Dance Little Lady, Dance Little Man

Read "Dance Little Lady, Dance Little Man" reviewed by Thomas Fletcher

It was back in 2017 when we were first introduced to Sam Braysher with his debut release Golden Earrings (Fresh Sound New Talent), performed alongside pianist, Michael Kanan and featuring a collection of reinterpreted songs from the Great American Songbook. Braysher is now following his own footsteps by releasing a trio album with a similar theme. The London-based alto saxophonist sees himself line up with Catalan percussionist Jorge Rossy, most recognisable for his spell with the Brad Mehldau ...

Gustav Lundgren: Live At Fasching

Read "Live At Fasching" reviewed by Chris May

If the Norway's Eivind Aarset is one side of Scandinavian fretboard virtuosity, Sweden's Gustav Lundgren is the other. Aarset works with experimentalists such as Jon Hassell and Jan Bang. Lundgren is more straight-ahead, evoking Jack Wilkins and Pat Metheny. Both guitarists, however, are lyrical players. If you enjoy the linear melodism of Lundgren's Live At Fasching, the chances are you will find pleasure in Aarset and Bang's recent Snow Catches On Her Eyelashes (Jazzland, 2020). The two albums are light ...
