Lars Haake

Born in Paderborn, Germany Lars picked up the piano at age 4 and the alto sax at age 10. After a few lessons with Martin Casey Lars was fortunate to study for three years with tenor sax great Tony Lakatos and soon after to join the local big band conducted by Reiner Franzke. Until high school graduation he studied with Melvin Philips. He also picked up the soprano sax and the flute with Mel. During his political science studies in Munich Lars attended clinics with Wayne Darling, Vincent Herring, Michael Brecker and programs organized by Berklee College of Music with Gary Burton, Bill Pierce, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell and Paul Motian. In 1998 after completing his masters Lars entered Berklee's program in Boston. He graduated in 2001 with a bachelor of music dual degree in performanc and film scoring, he has since been studying with Vincent Herring, Richie Beirach, Kenny Garrett and Bill Evans. Lars has been living in New York since 2001. He has toured in Europe and the US. He has performed with Kenwood Dennard, Valery Ponomarev, Hiram Bullock and James Genus among others. Between 2008 and 2010 Lars has curated the concert series "World of Jazz" at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. In September 2011 his first album "In the Picture" will be released featuring George Burton, James Genus and Wayne Smith Jr..

In the Picture (released September 27, 2011) is the debut album of alto saxophonist Lars Haake. It features Haake plus the rhythm section of James Genus (acoustic bass), George Burton (piano/fender rhodes) and Wayne Smith Jr. (drums) as well as Oli Rockberger (backup vocals on track 3).
