Ruth Goller: Skyllumina

Read "Skyllumina" reviewed by Chris May

The Italian-born, British-based bassist and composer Ruth Goller has been rattling jazz's cage since 2007, the year she joined Acoustic Ladyland. The band was in the vanguard of what became known as “jazz punk," although its sound was closer to metal than classic punk, and the lineup included tenor saxophonist Pete Wareham and drummer Sebastian Rochford. Four years later, Acoustic Ladyland disbanded and Goller and Wareham morphed into Melt Yourself Down, where they were joined by tenor saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings ...

Roamer: Lost Bees

Read "Lost Bees" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Roamer is vocalist Lauren Kinsella, drummer Matthew Jacobson, bassist/guitarist Simon Jermyn and saxophonist/flautist Matthew Halpin—four of Ireland's most lauded creative musicians. Formed in 2016, the quartet's activities have been frustratingly intermittent in the interim, though it is hardly surprising given that its members are based in London, Cologne, Berlin and Dublin. One early highlight came in 2017, when Roamer collaborated with Irish poet Cherry Smyth in an Arts Council-funded project at Bray Jazz Festival. That project has evolved to the ...

Take Five UK 2015

Take Five UK Edition X Bore Place Kent, England February 9 -14, 2015 Nestled in the heart of the Kent countryside is Bore Place, an organic farm that dates to the seventeenth century. Here, the mobile phone signal is unreliable and internet connection is dickey at best. The only sound is the tenor and baritone lowing of cows. It's the perfect place to plonk eight young jazz/improvising musicians for a week. The ...

Down With Jazz 2014

Down With Jazz Meeting House Square jny: Dublin, Ireland May 31-June 1, 2014 There's nothing quite like a Bank Holiday weekend, sunshine and music. Having moved from 2013's September slot with its unpredictable autumn weather to the last weekend in May with its unpredictable spring weather, Down With Jazz 2014 passed off dryly, which raised the spirits and surely contributed to the dancing that broke out sporadically. It was the combination of spirits--of ...

Lauren Kinsella: In Between Every Line

Read "Lauren Kinsella: In Between Every Line" reviewed by Ian Patterson

It may be that the voice is the most difficult instrument to improvise with, judging by the relatively small number of improvising vocalists out there. Jazz singers who scat are common enough, but only the best are able to breathe life into a style that has become rather formulaic over the past century. Lauren Kinsella (the stress lies on the first syllable) is one singer who is boldly carving out her own path as an improvising vocalist. The London-based Irish ...

Down With Jazz Den Of Vice Returns To Haunt Catholic Church

Source: All About Jazz

Down With Jazz, the festival that reels back the decades to the anti-jazz movement of the 1930’s, is back for a third edition; this time over the June Bank Holiday weekend. Who knows what class of devilment jny: Dublin's citizens will get up if the sun comes out, with hip swiveling music and decadent improvising from the country’s finest jazz musicians, and the trading of oysters and porter to boot? If that weren’t enough, the festival coincides with the premiere ...
