Leon Boykins

Leon Boykins strives to positively influence the public through music. With several studio projects as a sideman, and countless worldwide performances under his belt, bassist/composer/educator Leon Boykins is an established figure in the next generation of jazz artists. During his time in New York City he has been fortunate to share the stage with many musical greats including Terell Stafford, Orrin Evans, Donny McCaslin, Gilad Heckselman, Pascal Le Boeuf, Allan Harris, Shai Maestro, Ben Schachter, Dick Oatts, and John Swana. As an in demand sideman Leon prides himself in interpreting the artistic vision of each artist that he makes music with. Placing a large emphasis on education Leon holds a B.M (07) from Temple University and a M.M (11) from the Manhattan School of Music. His list of awards include various scholarships from the Manhattan School of Music, Temple University, West Virginia University and the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, as well as an outstanding soloist award from Down Beat Magazine. Mentors have included: Harvie S, Jeremy McCoy, Larry Grenadier, Madison Rast, Mike Boone, Dr. Andrew Kohn, Paul Thompson, Phil Markowitz, David Liebman and Dwayne Dolphin. He would like to thank his friends, family, books, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City for all the educational experiences that they have provided. Currently Leon is residing in New York City where he is preparing for the release of his first recording as a leader, while maintaining a busy performance schedule and continuing to pursue a devoted interest in songwriting and music production
