Logic has been making waves on the jazz/world music scene since its inception in 1999. Based in Melbourne, Australia, the ensemble aims to present its own unique, contemporary sound, whilst preserving the spontaneous and interactive approach of the jazz tradition. Jimmy Halperin: Cycle Logical

Jimmy Halperin: Cycle Logical

By my count, there are five major jazz tenor-saxophone schools. A school is defined as a particular approach or way of improvising that's so distinct and exceptional other saxophonists adopt it. On my list of tenor saxophonists whose styles became schools are Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Warne Marsh, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. Nearly all other tenor players fall into one of these five schools. Marsh's approach is thought of as vertical—meaning he typically charted an improvisational course though a ...

Are You Psychologically Suited for Success in the Music Industry?

Source: HypeBot

Often this comes in the form of looking at an aggregate sample of successful entrepreneurs, figuring out top psychological traits and saying you need to be this or that personality type to succeed. Yet research into entrepreneurship has repeatedly shown that successful business people have all sorts of personality types. A recent post at Diy Music Biz looks instead at what musicians must do to succeed ...

7 Ways to Avoid the Psychological Hazards of Music Entrepreneurship

Source: HypeBot

Building a career in music is often much more about becoming an entrepreneur than getting a job. And like entrepreneurs in other fields musicians face many emotional ups and downs that can derail their progress. Psychiatrist Michael A. Freeman recently shared some tips for tech entrepreneurs on dealing with emotional roller coasters that many musicians should find relevant. Silicon Valley has become more away of the psychological hazards of entrepreneurship in the wake of a number of tragic events involving ...

"A vibe that's a freewheeling swirl of jazz, funk, electronica, world fusion and blues that's grounded at times, trippy and sensual most of the time, and—on the wings of the ethereal vocals of Falu—truly transcendent and spiritual." —Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide New York, NY—We are at what is clearly a line of demarcation in our society, where the only thing that can be said with much clarity is that things going forward will be very different than they have ...

A Psychological Analysis of Record Industry Decline

A Psychological Analysis of Record Industry Decline

Source: HypeBot

Everyone has their own theory on why the record industry is in decline. In part, they all hold a grain of truth. Hundreds of things helped exacerbate the process—some obvious, others not. The diagnosis will always remain open to speculation. After ten years (or more) of the smartest minds in various fields prognosticating and predicting the death and subsequent rebirth of the record industry, it's quite difficult to offer an original take on what happened. It's all been said, at least ...

Aram Sinnreich, a professor at Rutgers University and author of the book Mashed Up, gave this speech at NYU in early December. It starts off a little slow, but it picks up speed as he breaks into music industry analysis. If you're looking for the quote that I pulled from the talk, you'll have to buffer to about an hour in. In this lecture, he gives a fascinating overview of the legislation that's being used in an attempt to hamper ...

Cell Phones and People -- The Largest Human Biological Experiment Ever?

Lab rats with cellphones? Our wireless lifestyle is making us all unwitting test subjects.

We love our digital gadgets -- “magic" devices that define cool and promise to remake our lives for the better. But there is growing evidence of a dark side to the techno-magic. Your cellphone, and any other wireless device that depends on electromagnetic (EM) microwave radiation to function, may be hazardous to your health. Most of the bad news comes from major labs and research institutions ...
