Markus Reuter

Markus Reuter is a producer, musician, composer & sound designer.

Born in 1972, Markus initially trained as a pianist before switching to guitar in the late 80's, and subsequently touch guitar in 1993. Soon after, he developed a unique skill for improvised composition, often employing loop-based technology in order to push the envelope of solo performance. In his teenage years, Markus studied music theory and composition with Karlheinz Straetmanns, in the tradition of Paul Hindemith & Harald Genzmer. In his twenties, he spent time with Daniel Schell studying his very special compositional techniques as well as some Indian music (with Ashok Pathak). Markus' technique as an instrumentalist and performer is largely based on studying Guitar Craft with Robert Fripp and Tony Geballe from 1991 - 1998.

Markus was aligned to several eclectic bands such as Europa String Choir, and String Unit (with Zoltan Lantos), both in the studio and live arena, as well as maintaining an ongoing relationship with electronic musician Ian Boddy - which has to date produced 4 albums and 2 virtual musical instruments.

Since the late 90's Markus's mainstay has been the Anglo-German band CENTROZOON, alongside long-term musical partner Bernhard Woestheinrich, and English singer Tim Bowness (of seminal art-rock band No-Man).

The group has attracted numerous celebrity fans, including guitarist David Torn, and King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, who has recently collaborated with Markus both on stage and in the studio. The pair released an album under the name TUNER in late 2005 and have released a second album 'POLE' in June 2007.

Markus continues to work in diverse fields incl. production & songwriting, sound design (for Native Instruments) and an increasing number of activities in performance art and scoring. His current main interest is the use of algorithmic composition in all sorts of styles (incl. ambient, pop & rock music) and generative approaches to sound design.

So far his work spans more than 40 albums. Live and studio work includes collaborations with artists and bands such as Alain Pinero, Lee Fletcher, Cathy Stevens, Renee Stieger, Ian Boddy, Daniel Schell, Zoltan Lantos, Modo Bierkamp, Dagobert Boehm, Nigel Mullaney, Elton Dean, Peter Chilvers, Simon Heyworth, Hugh Hopper, Michael Peters, Leander Reininghaus, Roberto Riggio, Laura Scarborough, Andrew Ostler, Heather Sullivan, Alessandro Bruno, Bert Lams, Udo Dzierzanowski, Tony Lakatos, Hideyo Moriya, Tim Bowness, Paul Richards, Lisa Fletcher, Thorsten Niestrath, Isildurs Bane, Denis Blackham, Fabrice DeGraef, Michael Bearpark, Stefano Panunzi, Mathias Grassow, Bill Munyon, Derek DiFilippo, Chris Wong, Pat Mastelotto, Stephen Parsick, Bernhard Woestheinrich, Davide Rossi, Henning Ruemenapp, Tim Bowness, Fabio Trentini, Tony Geballe, Richard Barbieri, Franco Feruglio, Toyah Willcox, synapscape, Luca Calabrese, Bill Rieflin, Christian Saggese, ULVER, Ritchie DeCarlo, Scott McGill, Percy Jones, Weekend Guitar Trio, starofash, UMA, Robert Rich, etc.

Tu-Ner: T1-Contact Information

After so many years crossing paths in the realm of experimental-industrial-groove-jazz-rock weirdness, it would have been more surprising if these three did not all join forces at some point. Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn build on a decades-long history in multiple King Crimson rhythm sections as well as their own duo called TU. Touch guitarist Markus Reuter plays with Mastelotto in the trio Stick Men as well as in their own duo called TUNER. (Gunn and Reuter have also performed ...

Stephan Thelen: Fractal Guitar 3

Read "Fractal Guitar 3" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Guitarist/composer Stephan Thelen presents the third installment of his Fractal Guitar series. Like the previous albums, the emphasis is on multiple guitars, layered in kaleidoscopic arrangements based on his compositions and guitar playing, but significantly colored by the contributions of his collaborators. This edition was also influenced by the other albums that he was working on simultaneously: Transneptunian Planets with J. Peter Schwalm, Eivind Aarset, Tim Harries and Manuel Pasquinelli (RareNoiseRecords, 2022); Fractal Sextet with Jon Durant, Fabio Anile, Colin ...

Mata Atlantica: Retiro e Ritmo

Read "Retiro e Ritmo" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

Retiro e Ritmo is a love letter to Mata Atlântica, the coastal rain forest of Brazil, and a call to help preserve and protect this beautiful habitat. The music supports that goal not by quoting or referencing Brazilian music directly, but by building a complex musical ecosystem that evokes it, obliquely creating a sense of place. The album is the brainchild of co-producer Mathias Derer, motivated by a 2017 Brazilian visit. Although he does not perform, he composed ...

Mata Atlantica: Retiro e Ritmo

Read "Retiro e Ritmo" reviewed by John Ephland

The coastal rainforest of Brazil, otherwise known as Mata Atlantica, and “its beauty and vivacity" are the inspiration for Retiro e Ritmo. It is an album frontloaded with a varied cast of characters from hither and yon. Maybe that casting is behind a project seeking to draw worldwide attention to the ongoing shit-storm that includes not only the Amazon but the whole planet. Retiro e Ritmo is deceptive, calling attention to a source of worldwide calamity all the ...

Markus Reuter & Stefano Castagna To Release New Collaborative Album 'Sea Of Hopeless Angels'

Markus Reuter & Stefano Castagna To Release New Collaborative Album 'Sea Of Hopeless Angels'

Source: Glass Onyon PR - William James

An unexpected concerto. The streets of Berlin. Nourishment and exhaustion. The celestial, moving among us. All of these things might describe (or, more accurately, permeate) Markus Reuter’s latest project—a spontaneous collaboration with Stefano Castagna. From a strictly Reuterian perspective, Sea of Hopeless Angels could be seen as a reaction to Markus’ furious and abrasive work with the free-rock improvisation quartet Anchor & Burden, one of his central priorities during 2022. At the same time, it stems directly from that project ...

Guitarist Markus Reuter Releases First Christmas Album

Guitarist Markus Reuter Releases First Christmas Album

Source: Glass Onyon PR - William James

Poly-disciplinary musician and touch guitarist Markus Reuter has just released his first Christmas album—a free, limited-availability-period recording of five traditional Christmas songs (each of which has been given Markus’ distinctive loop/solo/soundscape treatment). As with much of Markus’ music, the pieces are accessible and enjoyable while concealing hidden depths. Beneath and behind Markus’ soulful touch guitar renditions of the original melodies, billowing detailed soundscapes are built on re-examinations and explorations of the pitch series of each tune. Listeners can enjoy the ...

Markus Reuter's "Todmorden 513:" Algorithmic Poetics

Markus Reuter's "Todmorden 513:" Algorithmic Poetics

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

Markus Reuter has created an hour-long piece for ten players based on the algorithmic trans- formation, extension and reordering of musical material. He calls the work Todmorden 513. That the work is the product of some sophisticated methodological approaches is not uninteresting. But I've stayed away from that at this point to concentrate on a deep listening of the work. And having done this I come up for air to write up what I am feeling as I hear it. ...

Producer, musician, composer and sound designer Markus Reuter has just released the first performance of his contemporary classical piece 'Todmorden 513.' The piece is an algorithmic composition for live instruments and electronics. This recording of the piece is available for digital download (and on CD, see below) at markusreuter.com. 'Todmorden 513' is an hour-long composition based on a cycle of 513 evenly spaced chords that were strictly derived from systematic combinations of pitches and recursive definition (i.e. the repeated application ...
