Matt Aronoff

Bassist and composer Matt Aronoff grew up in Northern New Jersey. Matt played saxophone and trumpet throughout his childhood, but was always drawn to the bass. At 17 he found an upright bass in the high school music room and was able to use it; as long as he sang in the choir. While studying with Jonathan Storck of the NJ Symphony and jazz bassist John Webber, he earned a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. While in Pittsburgh, he studied with Pittsburgh Symphony double bassist Anthony Bianco and saxophonist Eric Kloss, both of whom became important mentors, musically and personally.

After a brief stint in Spain, he returned to the states where he was awarded a scholarship to attend Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Upon graduation, he immediately hit the road with his former professor and Grammy-winning vocalist Luciana Souza, touring her album, "The New Bossa Nova" (Verve Records, 2007).

Since that time, Aronoff has been deeply involved in the New York music scene being praised for his, “musicianship at the highest level, paired with an incredibly emotional connection with the crowd” (Jazz Advocate). To date, he has had the pleasure of playing, touring or recording with musicians including Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Peter Eldridge, New York Voices, Banda Magda, Matt Wilson, Jane Monheit and Anat Cohen in addition to performers such as Alan Cumming, Sandra Bernhard and Ana Gasteyer. Known for being, “greatly sensitive, with huge ears and a feel for accompaniment” (All About Jazz) Aronoff is a highly sought-after acoustic and electric bassist in and around New York City.

When he isn’t on the road, he is a Teaching Artist through Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute. Through this program, he has been given the opportunity to compose and perform music with and for people in neglected communities such as hospitals, prisons, detention centers and homeless shelters. These concerts, recordings and collaborations have made up some of Matt's most moving musical experiences of his life.

Ludovica Burtone: Sparks

Read "Sparks" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Remy Le Boeuf: Architecture of Storms

Read "Architecture of Storms" reviewed by Jack Bowers

It's hard to become bored or complacent when listening to Architecture of Storms, alto saxophonist Remy Le Boeuf's second album as leader of the twenty-member Assembly of Shadows orchestra. Every song is quite different from the others, and every one has its moments of shapeliness and charm. Le Boeuf arranged every number and composed all but Justin Vernon's “Minnesota, WI" and the album's nameplate, which he co-wrote with poet Sara Pirkle, he asserts, “on a brooding stormy ...

Brian McCarthy Nonet: After|Life

Read "After|Life" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Saxophonist Brian McCarthy, not one to shy away from a big theme, draws inspiration from the creation of the universe to craft After|Life Science says we are all stardust, compiled ultimately in all its complexities via gravity. Given that, he opens this expansive octet offering with “Nebula," referring to cosmic gasses consisting of hydrogen and deep space dust that--given gravity's propensities--coalesce into stars and solar systems consisting of planets with water, landforms and eventually us. Or something ...

Remy Le Boeuf's Assembly of Shadows: Architecture of Storms

Read "Architecture of Storms" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Remy Le Boeuf's Assembly of Shadows: Assembly of Shadows

Read "Assembly of Shadows" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Aubrey Johnson: Unraveled

Read "Unraveled" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

What does it take to move music from the strictly aural to revealing the more tactile elements like texture and consistency? Vocal artist, composer and arranger Aubrey Johnson, with her scoring hat on, demonstrates that intelligent instrument choice and subtle arrangement of notes in time coupled with sensitive sound engineering can produce music with a palpable touch and feel. On her debut recording Unraveled, Johnson curates a delicate collection of original and originally-arranged standards with an authentic organic finish and ...

DUCHESS: Live At Jazz Standard

Read "Live At Jazz Standard" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

There are a fair number of vocal groups blending harmoniously and swinging through the jazz set today, but none are as charmingly sassy as DUCHESS. With two studio albums already under a collective belt—actually three, if you include an under-the-radar Christmas set—it only made sense for vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou to finally show the greater listening community what Duchess does on the stage. Joining up with its regular rhythm section—pianist Michael Cabe, guitarist ...
