Matt DiGiovanna is an accomplished young saxophonist who recently completed his degree in jazz studies at California State University Northridge. He currently resides in New York City and is pursuing his master’s degree in jazz studies from New York University. Matt was a featured young artist at Steamers Jazz Club in Fullerton, CA and was a member of both the Tom Kubis Monday Night Big Band and Cerritos Community College big band. Matt performed at the 51st annual Monterey Jazz Festival as a member of the “CSUN Jazz A Band” under the direction of Matt Harris, and is a member of the 2009 Disneyland All-American College Band. Matt has also performed with the SCSBOA (Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association) High School and Junior High Jazz All Stars as well as the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo All State Festival Jazz Band. Matt has studied with Andy Milne, Ben Wendel, Billy Frenzel, Bill Liston, Brad Shepik, Chris Potter, Drew Gress, Jay Mason, Kirsten Edkins, Ralph Alessi, Rich Perry, Rob Lockart, and Sal Lozano.
Matt is also a promising band leader, composer and educator. He leads and composes for his trio Background Noise, and works frequently as a sideman. Matt is an adjunct faculty member at NYU and his saxophone studio consists of students ranging in age from 12- 21, where students learn the fundamentals of playing the saxophone, reading music, and jazz improvisation.
