Matyas Bartha

Emerging pianist Mátyás Bartha has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists such as Sheila Jordan, Kevin Mahogany, Kenny Washington, Fay Claassen, John Marshall, Jim Rotondi, Dan Barrett, James Morrison, Joe Magnarelli, Scott Robinson, Scott Hamilton, and Don Menza.

Initiating his musical journey at the age of eight in his Hungarian hometown, Szentendre, Bartha later pursued his education under the guidance of Olaf Polziehn at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. During this time, he had the opportunity to study with renowned musicians such as Stjepko Gut, Michael Abene, Dena DeRose, and Renato Chicco.

As a young talent, Mátyás was twice selected to the Generations in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, there he had the chance to study and play with David Hazeltine, Louis Hayes, Peter Washington, Mark Turner and Alex Sipiagin.

Since 2015, Bartha is based in Vienna, Austria, where he performs with Martin Breinschmid, Herbert Swoboda, Mario Gonzi, Lukas Gabric and many others.

He started the Coquette Jazz Band with his musical partner, Mátyás Papp in 2015 where they concentrate on the swinging style of the 30’s, 40’s. The band released 3 CDs with the Hungarian record Label, Hunnia. 

In 2016 he started another international project with his college Guillem Arnedo. The Bartha/Arnedo Quartet made his first CD release in 2023, ‘It’s About Time’(Hunnia)

Mátyás's trio, featuring Danny Ziemann and Christian Salfellner, highlights not only his role as a composer but also his distinctive artistic direction. They released two CDs, Self-Reflection (Alessarecords) and From This Moment On (Doublemoon Records).

He began teaching at the Music Conservatory of Innsbruck in 2023, where he teaches jazz-piano and improvisation.

Bartha is also known for his solo piano playing beside his band projects, because of his eloquent stride style and tasteful usage of voice leading techniques.

Barthas projects are evidence of his high respect for all music and his aim to connect traditional jazz with other genres.
