Memorize The Sky: In Former Times

Read "In Former Times" reviewed by Clifford Allen

Reedman Matt Bauder, percussionist Aaron Siegel and bassist Zach Wallace have worked together for almost a decade, but In Former Times, recorded live in Austria at the Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon, is only their second full-length disc. Siegel is, in addition to applying his pared-down kit of snare, bass drum and vibes to this recording, a composer of electronic music. Though one might, from the instrumentation, assume this to be another power trio/free-bop outing, Memorize the Sky focuses on sparse and often ...

Memorize the Sky: Memorize the Sky

Read "Memorize the Sky" reviewed by Jim Santella

Searching for a cosmic balance, woodwind player Matt Bauder, bassist Zach Wallace and drummer Aaron Siegel spread their improvised music out like the heavens above. Soft as clouds and containing enough space to let their thoughts commingle gradually, the session rides on a feather chariot. Bauder plays tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet on this, the trio's first full-length recording. Both Wallace and Siegel add vibraphone to the arsenal, while all three contribute quaint percussion effects. Like the ...

Memorize The Sky: Memorize The Sky

Read "Memorize The Sky" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

Multi-instrumentalists Matt Bauder, Zach Wallace and Aaron Seigel began performing in Ann Arbor in the late 1990s as Memorize The Sky. Their improvisations make their way through several idioms in a natural flow of ideas bonded by their empathy. In bringing that about, they do not sacrifice structure. There is a coherent logic that can leap out of rhythmic flexes or from the warm flow of chamber music harmonies. And then there is the element of surprise, which springs from ...

Memorize the Sky - Creeks (Broken Research, 2010) ****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels

By Stef I was quite thrilled by “In Former Times," the second album by “Memorize The Sky," for its uncompromising nature and their adventurous take on the sax trio, a journey they take totally over the edge in “Creeks." The band is Matt Bauder on reeds, Zach Wallace on bass and Aaron Siegel on percussion. And they add some electronics. Strangely enough, the album reminds me of John Zorn's “O'o“ because of its fresh jungle and bird sounds, with one ...

482 Music to Release Memorize the Sky's First Full-Length CD May 8th

Source: Improvised Communications

On May 8th, 482 Music will release Memorize The Sky (482-1053), the first full-length recording from the decade-old improvising collective of the same name, featuring saxophonist/clarinetist Matt Bauder, bassist Zach Wallace and percussionist Aaron Siegel. Often resembling electronic music despite being performed on acoustic instruments, these eight tracks were culled from over six hours of improvisations recorded in the fall of 2005. This new release is the follow-up to 2005's 2 + 2 Compositions (482 Music), a compositional collaboration with ...
