Mural: Shishi's Wish

Read "Shishi's Wish" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

I brani ...

Mural: Tempo

Read "Tempo" reviewed by John Eyles

The most significant thing about Tempo is that it was recorded live in concert at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. This octagonal space (pictured on the album cover, right) opened in 1971, a year after Mark Rothko's death. It is sparsely furnished and painted white, with fourteen of Rothko's late works--large black canvasses--displayed around its walls. All of this gives the chapel a unique ambience that is conducive to quiet contemplation, if not prayer. It has inspired musicians ranging ...

35 years of Jazz in Santa Cruz, California Celebrated through Jazz Alley Mural

Source: Bennett Jackson

Santa Cruz, California's Kuumbwa Jazz Center has grown from its small beginnings to one of the most highly respected jazz-presenting institutions in the country, attracting artists of national and international renown. In 2010, the venue turned 35 and celebrated by helping to commission Jazz Alley, a 80-foot-by-12-foot mural depicting five famous jazz artists, but not the usual suspects that have been immortalized on similar murals throughout the world. The artists were chosen by Kuumbwa Jazz as musicians that have been ...

Philip Stein, Muralist Who Adorned Village Vanguard Jazz Club, Dies

On the back-wall mural at the Village Vanguard, the famous jazz club in Greenwich Village, a primordial man and woman burst from a kaleidoscopic background of brightly colored geometric forms.

For more than 40 years musicians have gazed, perhaps with some puzzlement, at this visionary artwork, suggestive of birth, creative dynamism and human aspiration. Patrons seated on bar stools at the back of the club have come to think of the big, curved mural as a visual counterpart to the ...

Four Score and some years Musicians Find it Hard to Land a Gig

Forty years in the future, humanity will be on the brink of mass extinction due to its blatant neglect toward the environment; robots will steal most of our jobs (even mine); I'll be too old to care about technology. But those are just my predictions. Let's hear what people less jaded have to say -- the children, in particular. The Intel Computer Clubhouse Network on Thursday launched ...

Mural of Hoagy Carmichael unveiled in Richmond. A large mural of jazz legend Hoagy Carmichael has been dedicated in Richmond, where the “Stardust" composer first recorded.

About 50 onlookers, including Carmichael's 67-year-old son Randy Carmichael, watched Saturday as the mural on the side of the Readmore building was unveiled in the eastern Indiana city. Carmichael, who died in 1981, first recorded at Gennett Records in Richmond in 1925. Pamela Bliss and her daughter Carly Mattingly Bailey, who painted the mural, ...
