Nenad Vasilic

Serbian Nenad Vasilic, who settled in Austria more than 15 years ago, is a bass player and composer. Of course, it goes without saying that his musical roots lie in the former Yugoslavia. His new CD is called "Just Fly".

He is a restless composer and prize-winning musician, who lives out his visions in his band formations, both musically and on a personal level. Because the simplest form of communication in the world is music. It negates the need to ask about origins or skin colour. When you play a swing with a 7/8 beat, an inseparable sense of brotherhood develops. In his luggage, Vasilic has a copy of his new CD “Just Fly”, hot off the press.

On the CD, the excursions through the traditions of the Balkans by means of jazz have a persuasive and fluid impact. Folklore and jazz combine in him in songlike melody, and the wildness of the East is to be found in the rhythm. Balkan jazz? Maybe, but Nenad Vasilic cares little for any categorisation of his music. He himself says he can only describe his music as being his music. His music " whether it be jazz, ethno, classical, improvisation, heavy metal, rock, world music or trash. Some of these elements are evident in “Just Fly”, are reflected and cast the listener under their spell.

Actually, Bojan Z has lent his talent on Vasilic's album Seven where he was a guest on just two tracks. At one time, ...

Nenad Vasilic: The Art of the Balkan Bass

Read "The Art of the Balkan Bass" reviewed by Nenad Georgievski

Solo playing routinely interrogates virtually every assumption one can have about music and its function. It is also the most demanding discipline in improvised music. Here, none of the well known clichés apply: there are no “dialogues," no “sparring" or contention with a partner, no call and response. So far, there has been a plethora of pianists, keyboardists, guitarists, violinists, harpists who have the wherewithal to accompany themselves, either harmonically and/or rhythmically, and to play countermelodies or contrasting lines. Sometimes ...

Nenad Vasilic: Seven

Read "Nenad Vasilic: Seven" reviewed by Nenad Georgievski

In the long, well-intended history of aligning the spontaneity of jazz with sounds, rhythms and harmonies of various folk musics, the predicament lies in finding the linkages between two disparate idioms without sacrificing mutual integrity. Bassist and composer Nenad Vasilić tackles this issue in a very distinct way as he successfully marries the festive folk sounds of his native Nish (southern Serbia) with the jazz music to which he has devoted his life.A resident of Vienna, Vasilić is ...
