Mangione Brothers: Hey Baby!

Mangione Brothers: Hey Baby!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Post-war jazz was peppered with fraternal wonders. Among the many families with exceptional jazz siblings in the 1950s were the Montgomerys, the Garners, the Turrentines, the Heaths, the Adderleys, the Joneses (Hank, Thad and Elvin) and the Candolis. Jazz wasn't genetic. In the decade after the end of World War II, music was one of the few ways up and out of crowded households and poverty. Later, of course, would come the Marsalises, the Breckers, the Cohens, the Claytons and ...

Today is the start of my annual two-week holiday visit with great film. Think of this two-week period as cinematic jazz or music to the eyes. What both jazz and great cinema have in common is poetry. ...

Married to his third wife, Janie New, Dorsey passed away several days shy of a court appearance to reply to New's divorce suit. According to the autopsy, Dorsey, 51, had thrown up while he slept, and food lodged in his windpipe and lungs. For whatever reason, Dorsey did not have a will, and he reportedly left only ...

Four Others - and more

Four Others - and more

A few years ago, Marian’s Jazzroom in Switzerland asked Harry Allen to put together a four-saxophone band for its Bern Jazz Festival. He quickly thought of the classic sound of the Four Brothers sax section from Woody Herman’s Second Herd in the late 1940s. That renowned unit featured tenor players Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward, and baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff. With no alto players in the mix, the rich, deep sound of the unison horns stood out on ...
