OU

OU is dialect for ‘egg’ in Sardinia, the remote island in the Mediterranean.

OU is finally amongst us, the news has come. The egg said to be an ancient thing, of distant origins. Others are convinced that OU comes from the far future, like a signal for our generation. Spotted at the circus, in a jazz club, in line at a mall during Christmastime, singing and laughing with a group of pygmies, partaking in a Thai cooking class; a collective burning desire is to hear that egg wail on ukulele in a teeny tiny bedroom…

OU has arrived, and waits with psychedelic calm to show all its contents, sound and motion.

And who can forget the Great Speculation: the first hypothesis of the egg was it gave forth to new forms, the embryo of something unexpected, some kind of creature not filling any known categories.

Furthermore, those smitten by dogma say that the egg’s contents are the origin of existence itself!

OU is here, impassive to all this, still floating in its simple form, full of energy and ready for a deep conversation with all beings on this planet.

Backgrounder: Herbie Mann - Yardbird Suite

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

By 1957, the West Coast jazz scene was firmly established and its musicians were working regularly in Los Angeles' many recording studios. The best ones worked relentlessly cranking out 12-inch LPs. The same was true of New York's jazz scene, where improvisers found themselves in strong demand by leading labels such as Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy and Riverside. That year, six of the finest New York players appeared on Yardbird Suite, an extraordinary album led by flutist Herbie Mann. Recorded ...

Backgrounder: Sonny Stitt - Tune-Up!

Perhaps the high points of Joe Fields's Cobblestone label were a pair of albums by Sonny Stitt released in 1972—Tune-Up! and Constellation. Both were produced by Don Schlitten. On Tunre-Up!, Stitt played alto and tenor saxophone and was accompanied by Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. What made this album (and Constellation) special was Stitt's commanding speed, clean lines and bebop fluidity. I remember buying both at Sam Goody in Manhattan that year ...

Anita O'Day was one of jazz's first “slick chicks." Born Anita Colton in 1919, O'Day was raised in Chicago. She left home during the Depression at age 14 to become a walk-a-thon contestant—the last person standing after sleepless hours won a cash prize. Dance-a-thons would soon follow. In 1936, O'Day began singing professionally and fronted her fist big band two years later. In 1941, she joined Gene Krupa's band and revolutionized the term girl singer, opening the door to attitude. ...
