Erica Seguine: The New Day Bends Light

Read "The New Day Bends Light" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Erica Seguine/Shon Baker Orchestra: The New Day Bends Light

Read "The New Day Bends Light" reviewed by Jack Bowers

The New Day Bends Light, the debut recording by the twelve-year-old Erica Seguine/Shon Baker Orchestra, is interesting on a number of levels, not the least of which is emotional. The leaders and their twenty-one piece ensemble are clearly committed to the music and do their best to breathe life into each of the album's seven numbers, three of which were written by Seguine, three by Baker and the other ("Ose Shalom") by Nurit Hirsh. Aside from that, there is the ...

Peter Hess Quartet: Present Company

Read "Present Company" reviewed by Jim Worsley

What word to say first, refreshing or wow? Perhaps, wow, this is refreshing! With the assorted amount of experimental jazz that often needed more time in the lab, that is an assault on the unsuspecting ear, the Peter Hess Quartet have concocted their own penicillin. No longer lab rats, minds can be allowed to thrive and grow. With seven original compositions, the first five by Hess, this quartet was clearly not content to rely on the tried and ...

Slavic Soul Party: Live at Barbes: Slavic Soul Party Plays Duke Ellington's Far East Suite

Read "Live at Barbes: Slavic Soul Party Plays Duke Ellington's Far East Suite" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

In the late 1990s, visionary percussionist Matt Moran founded Slavic Soul Party, a brass band designed to stretch the boundaries between Eastern and Western European traditional music until those boundaries snap. More than two decades and twenty members later, “New York's Official #1 Brass Band for BalkanSoulGypsyFunk" fully realizes this vision by performing one of Duke Ellington's most famous Billy Strayhorn collaborations: 1963's The Far East Suite, around which Ellington organized a global tour schedule through the Middle East, South ...

Slavic Soul Party: Plays Duke Ellington's Far East Suite

Read "Plays Duke Ellington's Far East Suite" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi
