Steven Frieder

Originally from Croton On Hudson, NY, Steven Frieder has established himself in the professional music scene as an exceptional, versatile saxophonist. Fluent in the styles of Jazz, Funk, Latin, Rock and free improvisation, his robust, old school sound speaks far beyond his 24 years, while his compositional and melodic approach to improvisation push toward new discoveries. Steven is an alumnus of the The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and also studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He was awarded the honor of Valedictorian of the New School for Jazz and C.M., class of 2013. He was also selected to represent the New School at the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland in April ‘13, performing for a week before the headliner, McCoy Tyner and the Latin Jazz All-Stars. He Recently teleased his first album as a leader, After Time, that features Bob Meyer on Drums, Luke Franco on Guitar, and Peter Brendler on Bass, produced by Jake Hertzog.

Steven has had years of performing, recording and teaching experience in the NYC/Hudson Valley areas. This far in his young career, he has recorded with the likes of Jon Burr, Bob Meyer, Alvester Garnett, John Hart, Neil Alexander and other jazz artists. He is also a member of a number of NYC funk/R&B bands including Massive Brass, Roof Access, and Pete Ayres Band. He has also performed with the likes of Joe Lovano, Cameron Brown, Sol Yaged, Harvie S., Jake Hertzog, Jay Azzolina, Dave Gibson, Shunzo Ohno and many others.He is currently a member of the Bob Meyer Project, along with guitarist Luke Franco. Steven is also a member of NYC funk band Milo Z, and will touring in Greece in February, 2015.

Steven has performed with many groups at established venues in New York, such as Birdland, Fat Cat, BB Kings, The Bitter End,The Falcon Arts Center, The Red Lion, Bordot Heights, The Bean Runner Café, National Underground, Doma Na Rohu, The Living Room, Goodbye Blue Monday, A.B.C. No Rio, and The Underground Lounge. He has lead groups at the Peekskill Jazz and Blues Festival, as well as the Hudson Valley Jazz Festival. In December, 2014, Steven performed live at Birdland with the Jon Burr Quartet, broadcasted on WNYC for the Jonathan Schwartz Christmas Special.

In February, 2012, he was featured in the Jack Kleinsinger’s 39th anniversary “Highlights In Jazz” concert as a part of the “New Generation Stars” group, along with special guest, Bassist, James Cammack. In Februrary of 2013 he was a special guest on the 40th anniversary concert of Highlights in Jazz, performing along side Clarinetist Ken Peplowski and trumpeter Bria Skonberg.
