Susanna Wallumrod

Susanna Wallumröd is well known for her two critical acclaimed albums as well as a string of great concerts with Susanna and the Magical Orchestra. Her beautiful voice has proven to interpret both her own and others songs in a remarkebly fair and astonishing way. Her first solo album is a rare and personal album containing 12 self written songs. The music is ilimitable and takes on a life of its own.

Jenny Hval & Susanna: Meshes of Voice

After winning the Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy) for her first release on the fledgling Susanna Sonata label, the career-defining collaboration with Ensemble neoN, The Forester (2013), singer Susanna resists the urge to repeat herself by moving on to even more experimental territory with Meshes of Voice, this time together with fellow Norwegian vocalist Jenny Hval--a collaboration that, in retrospect, seems absolutely inevitable. Prior to launching her Susanna Sonata label, Susanna was a (largely) Rune Grammofon recording artist, releasing albums ...

Susanna and Ensemble neoN: The Forester

It's strange how a single event can change--or, at least, appear to change--an artist's direction, transporting it to a place previously seeming unreachable or, at the very least, unexpected. Prior to the surprise of 2012's sublime If Grief Could Wait (ECM), Norwegian singer Susanna Karolina Wallumrød was largely splitting her time. On one hand, there were solo recordings like 2009's Flower of Evil and 2007's Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos (both Rune Grammofon) that, running the gamut from inventive covers of ...

Susanna: Flower of Evil

Though it's now de rigueur to interpret material that, on the surface at least, hasn't got a lot going for it, Norwegian singer Susanna Wallumrod has, in addition to her own compelling songwriting, managed to find the fullest depth of experience in music by artists ranging from the more credible Leonard Cohen and Sandy Denny to the completely unexpected Kiss and AC/DC. Her last album, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos (Rune Grammofon, 2007), under the simple moniker Susanna, was a departure ...

Susanna: Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos

Leaving behind the imaginative covers of artists including Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny and Bob Dylan on Melody Mountain (Rune Grammofon, 2006)--by her collaborative duo Susanna and the Magical Orchestra with keyboardist Morten Qvenild of In the Country--Susanna Wallumrod goes the singer/songwriter route with her first album as a solo artist, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos. It's a bold move, coming so close on the heels of Melody Mountain, but while Susanna (who goes only by her first name here) is a ...

Some short reviews about Susanna:

A true talent in the vein of Chan Marshall and Mira Billotte, she sings like a Norwegian mountain stream. Pitchforkmedia (US)

Her voice is extraordinary, effortlessly wedding mountain-stream purity to a deep soulfulness. Mojo (UK)

Wallumrød’s voice takes your breath away. The Observer (UK)

A dolorous delight. Uncut (UK)

Wallumrød acts like it matters a lot, in the same way that Nina Simone would take just about anything in the ‘60s and ‘70s and reinterpret it as the most harrowingly personal tune ever. Cokemachineglow (US)
