Terry Hsieh Collective

As one of the few groups from the United States that regularly travel to China to perform and teach jazz music, the Terry Hsieh Collective is an example of the multicultural face of music to come. Composed of fellow jazz students at the renowned Oberlin Conservatory, the music of THC is unequivocally powerful and unafraid to tell a story. Their music is a potent combination of influences, from travels abroad and beyond jazz: pop, rock, classical and even traditional Chinese music. Their structure— a seven piece instrumental sonic orchestra; their vision— to make serious music that you can still rock out to.

In the winter of 2010, trombonist Terry Hsieh had the chance to bring a group of jazz musicians from Oberlin Conservatory, the Terry Hsieh Collective (THC), to China, to play and perform on the dime of a patron of the Beijing jazz scene. While the time they spent there was short, the chance to take in the culture in order to create music and art would have a lasting effect on their musical development. From lessons with a master of the traditional balladic art of Shuo-chang, to the opportunities to work with contemporary musicians and other Jazz artists, THC’s musical identity as a group came to be shaped by their experiences abroad. In the following years, Terry brought back two more groups, ending in the current inversion of THC.

The Terry Hsieh Collective is currently: Alex Cummings (a), Pat Adams (tpt), Terry Hsieh (tbn), Matt Adomeit (b), Peter Manheim (d), Matt Gold (g), Jacob Baron (p).

“You sometimes hear talk of a “little big band,” meaning a band that’s not the big, bulky capacity of your usual, 17- to-22 piece ensemble, but has the same basic flavor and fullness. Well, even those “little big bands” are generally larger than the seven members who make up the Terry Hsieh Collective, but damned if these guys don’t have the feel of a contemporary big band anyway. The mix of trombone (Hsieh), trumpet (Pat Adams), and alto sax (Alex Cummings) goes a long way toward creating that feel, putting high, mid-range, and low right there on the front line
