Tommy Igoe

For more than 20 years, Tommy Igoe, has been blazing a trail in the music industry as a sideman, band leader, and educator. His Birdland Big Band is the hottest band in the world's biggest music market, and Tommy leads the band's sold out shows with the same passion and energy that has made him one of the world's top drummers.

Tommy lives and works in New York, but has recorded and toured internationally with artists such as: Stanley Jordan, Art Garfunkel, Lauryn Hill, Dave Grusin, New York Voices, Patti Austin, Mark Mancina, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and David Wilcox. Recently, he wrote the drum book for Disney's legendary Broadway musical, The Lion King, integrating the modern day drum set into the heavily-percussive African score.

Tommy's instructional videos are top-sellers and have gained worldwide acclaim. His latest, Groove Essentials 2.0 (Hudson Music), is a must-have resource for drummers of all ages and playing levels. This product, plus the original Groove Essentials title, feature DVD and play-along versions.

Tommy's debut CD, "New Ground," received numerous 4-star reviews from international music magazines. Modern Drummer magazine called it "breathtaking" and "inventive and disarmingly strong."

More recently, Tommy and the "BBB" have released the CD "Live From New York" CD. This incredible 9-song disc catches the band tearing up a myriad of jazz, funk, and Latin tunes.

Tommy Igoe: The Tommy Igoe Groove Conspiracy

Read "The Tommy Igoe Groove Conspiracy" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Known as one of the best drummers in the jazz world today, Tommy Igoe is also one of the most in-demand musicians around and since 2006, Igoe and the Birdland Big band have been holding residency at New York's Birdland Jazz Club which apparently, is not enough to keep the drummer grounded. Igoe now lives in San Francisco where--simultaneously with the Birdland Club gig--he is also holding weekly residency at the Bay Area's most famous jazz club, Yoshi's and now ...

Jazz audiences in the Bay Area are starting to realize what their New York counterparts have known for years--namely, that drummer Tommy Igoe puts together a hell of a band and puts on a hell of a show. Igoe, the man who gave rhythmic life to Broadway's The Lion King and changed the face of drum set pedagogy with his Groove Essentials books, has been tearing it up on Friday nights with The Birdland Big Band since ...

Tommy Igoe and the Birdland Big Band: Eleven

Read "Eleven" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Like many other corners in that amorphous room called jazz, big band jazz has grown more abstract and experimental since its heyday in the 1930s. This process is necessary for the creative evolution of the art, but often produces music that is as unlistenable as it is creative--or brilliant. Abstract growth may be considered horizontal evolution, but there is also vertical evolution; evolution that values working within the parameters of the conventional--using arrangements of ever- increasing intricacy, but not at ...
