EC3

Ernest “EC3 Coleman III BIO Ernest, a second generation musician, was born in Naples, Italy to Ernest and Rebecca Coleman. His father, Ernest Jr., was a jazz musician who played tenor sax and was also a great arranger and composer.

Ernest studied at the Naval Conservatory of Music in Norfolk, Virginia and was awarded a special honor for being the youngest student to graduate from this conservatory. After his tour with the Navy Band, Ernest moved to Los Angeles, California and began his true musical quest. He performed for Guys & Dolls, Ain’t Misbehavin, Bourbon Street Review, and A Chorus Line.

Ernest got the call to work with Loretta Holloway in Las Vegas opening for Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, David Brenner, Yakov Smirnoff, Whoopi Goldberg, Don Rickles and many many more. Ernest soon took over as Loretta’s musical director and continued on to travel to places like Russia, Bermuda, Japan, Canada, Virgin Islands, and Brazil, among many places around the world. Ernest worked with Loretta for over twelve years, playing with major symphonies and was responsible for conducting from behind the drums.

Then Ernest received the call of a lifetime! He was offered an opportunity to play with the great jazz legend"the one and only jazz bassist, “Al McKibbon”. Mr. “McKibbon” was the bassist for a Broadway show out of New Orleans, entitled “The Bourbon Street Review”. Ernest was very excited to get this call and realized he had to pass an audition to get booked for the show. Ernest was very familiar with “Al McKibbon”, because Al was the noted bass player for the “Giants of Jazz” Tour, with “Thelonious Monk” and ‘Dizzy Gillespie’. At the conclusion of the audition, Ernest was offered the job and would go on to play three shows a night, six nights a week for the next three years. Do the math"that’s eighteen shows a week! This was one of the best learning experiences in Ernest’s life!

“Al McKibbon” and Ernest grew very close"he was like a second father to Ernest. They lived together for many years and this was where Ernest attained most of his great knowledge of music. After the close of this show, Ernest received the call from jazz drummer, Mr. “Billy Higgins”, whom Ernest met in Los Angeles several years prior.

Mr. Higgins offered Ernest a job with jazz saxophonist, “Azar Lawrence”. Ernest accepted and went on the road with “Azar Lawrence” for the next year and a half. This was another great experience for Ernest.

EC3: It's All About the Rhythm

Read "It's All About the Rhythm" reviewed by Jeffrey Uhrich

Joy and exuberance are like prevailing winds throughout “It's All About the Rhythm", the third release by drummer/bandleader EC3 (aka Ernest Coleman). Vibrant and full of life, EC3 assembles a sound rhythmic foundation in his arrangements of popular and well-known songs mixed with newer, lesser known compositions. EC3 relates that in arranging the songs “[i]n musical styles from Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz to straight-ahead swing, 'It's All About the Rhythm' describes the CD and my philosophy about life."

By organically blending elements of electronica and ambient music with bits of chamber music and jazz, the innovative trio of pianist Michele Cavallari, bassist Luca Fogagnolo and drummer Guiliano Ferrari has come up with a wholly unique sound on Elec3Cities that may establish a daring new direction for the piano trio. This delicate balance of electronic experimentalism and acoustic piano jazz has been evolving gradually from the group’s initial release in 2006, Adoption, and continued on 2007’s Decoupage through 2008’s ...

Drummer EC3 Releases New CD: It's All About The Rhythm

Source: Karen Hatchett

“Music and life are really all about the groove,” says drummer and bandleader EC3. “You find harmony and it’s good, you get off the beat and it’s challenging. When I was recording the new CD, the foundation was rhythm heavy and we built on that. I was blessed to play with some of the best cats on the east coast. We chose some of the most incredible songs ever written and I arranged them in musical styles from Afro-Cuban and ...

Tirana Jazz-Bledar Sema, Impuls shpk, Rr. "Donika Kastrioti"", Tirana/ Albania http://www.tiranajazzradio.com

Of all the new entries in Tirana Jazz Radio’s musical archive the most distinguished is definitely Ernest Coleman. When we listened to his music we felt sorry we had not contacted him before. We think that his album “Her Eyes At Sunset” has the music that every radio needs in its’ repertoire. In it you may find rhythms, harmony, techniques, melody and artistic sensitiveness every listener would indulge into. Mr. Coleman’s performance enwraps in a velvety smoothness not only the performance of the other artists but also the listener itself, with the confidence of a perfectionist and yet conveying every bit of the romance that the album promises in its title. With its’ colorful rhythms, “Her Eyes At Sunset” lands you in many different places, places that Mr. Coleman thought we would like to experience, through his music. After we had an opportunity to listen the CD and shared our impressions we decided in unison that Mr. Coleman deserves a place in the “Drummers Realm”. Tirana Jazz Radio wishes to thank Mr. Coleman for the pleasure his music gives to our listeners! Tirana Jazz Radio Team 12/15/2011
