Esquivel was a Mexican band leader, pianist, and composer for television and films and widely considered the king of a style of late 1950s early 1960s quirky instrumental pop known today as lounge music. His orchestration tended toward the very lush, employing novel instrumental combinations, such as Chinese bells, mariachi bands, whistling, and numerous percussion instruments blended with orchestra, mixed chorus, and his own heavily-ornamented piano style. The chorus was called upon to sing only nonsense syllables, most famously “zu-zu" ...

Source: Lauren Rogers

(Milan, Italy)—Even when he's in a “Bad Mood," such as on the opening track of his 2008 album, Jazz for Sale,Klaus Bellavitis is swinging away, his deep croon sometimes tossing comic darts or flirtatious come-ons. Bellavitis is scheduled to release a new album, Change, this month; currently being mastered, the ...

Mr. Ho's Orchestrotica - The Unforgettable Sounds of Esquivel (2010)

Source: Something Else!

By Mark Saleski Walk down the street and stop twenty random people, asking them their opinion of Esquivel? If you get less than 19 “Huhwuh?"'s, I'd be impressed. That's sort of too bad because Juan Garcia Esquivel had far too many musical ideas in his head. Add some pedal steel to the sound of a big band? Why not?! Zingy wordless vocals? Can you say “Zu Zu Zu!"? How about recording two orchestras simultaneously? Was that stereo? Sort of. I ...
