Album Description
Evolving is a story of a butterfly and its transformative journey. It expresses the emotion of serenity and hope amidst uncertainty, faith for what future holds, and the courage to embrace change in life, which we all can learn from and relate to as human beings. The opening suite, Summer Sky is about the birth of a butterfly. The piece begins softly with a repetitive note signifying tiny butterfly eggs laid on leaves, the seeds of life. Through -composed with dynamic fluctuations, the piece builds to a loud crescendo which expresses that in order to gain something, sometimes we have to give something up. To become a butterfly, metamorphosis is necessary. We can learn that giving something up isn't necessarily painful. Growth is needed when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change. As a composer I get my creative juices flowing at night time, and that was when While The World is Sleeping was created. During daylight we become preoccupied daily problems and lose our ability to be in tune with own our emotions and to connect with others. Like a butterfly rests for a while on petals before it spreads its wings and flies, finding quiet time to reflect can spark creativity and be rewarding for growth, as a person and as an artist. The bass ostinati and melodic patterns which complement each other in a logical harmonic progression in The Circle signify all things move in cycles. All beings have a place and purpose in this circle of life. The butterfly has a critical role in bringing balance to the ecosystem and it is important for individuals to unlock their own potential to bring great things to others, as we are all interconnected. I was thinking about the caterpillar trying to find a place to hide from predators while composing Safe Distance. This piece captures the human need to feel safe and their desire to belong. It points to the way in which we sometimes need to distance ourselves from things that prove harmful or bear a negative influence on us, inhibiting our own progression. “It’s the end of the world,” said the caterpillar. “It’s the beginning of the world,” said the butterfly. The process of Evolving is a constant metaphor of life. I used "When you find yourself cocooned in isolation and cannot find your way out of the darkness, remember that this is similar to the place where caterpillars go to grow and unfold their wings" (unknown) when composing Unfolding. High Above the City is about the butterfly in all its beauty having been completely transformed and now finally able to spread its wings and fly. This song expresses the end result in which strength was gained through struggles, adversity and persistence.
