Album Description
New Orleans-based jazz band Sabertooth Swing just released their debut album Extinct Possibilities pack-full of lively
swing music with crossover appeal and a breath of fresh air in an otherwise venerable genre.
Any random Sunday in the city, after dark on a hot summer night, one can wander into a world where young and old
people gather to listen to Jazz and dance frantically all night long, seemingly immune to the moist, thick atmosphere,
tapping, shouting, laughing and, always, responding to the musicians' frenzy.
Sabertooth Swing was born of this cradle, emerging from various formations who had played at different dance events
over the years. With their first album "Extinct Possibilities," they are now intent to bring their music to new places.
Opening with a cover of the English rock band The Kinks ("Alcohol"), the album immediately sets a fun tone that does
not shy from eclectic influences and borrowed styles. The Sabertooth cats aim to reconnect jazz to its original party-
filled spirit, intended for long nights of dancing and popular gathering in small rooms. After all, wasn't it Buddy Bolden
himself who asked to open up the windows and let the air out?
Not that one necessarily has to stick to the traditional repertoire. "Extinct Possibilities" has, of course, a couple of
homages to the roots of this culture, such as a version of Louis Armstrong's "I Get Ideas" or "Mean and Evil Blues." But it
also wanders into a world of varied influences, adding a reggae intro here ("Mack the Knife"), re-interpreting a popular
television show's soundtrack there ("Family Guy"), rearranging a Jamaican ska tune a-la New Orleans marching style (
"Wings of a Dove"), mixing the legendary French songwriter Georges Brassens with Amy Winehouse ("Je m'suis Fait Tout
Petit/Back to Black"), or simply distilling the blasé style of the great Serge Gainsbourg ("Black Trombone").
In the spirit of a music made with and for people, with an organic connection between music, dance and fun, we sure
hope that you'll enjoy the Sabertooth Swing's debut album and, who knows, might find yourself irresistibly tapping a
toe or shuffling a foot while you listen.
