Album Description

This past year, particularly marked by the Covid 19 epidemic, has been a terrible test for all of us. Many of us have fallen ill, more or less seriously, some without any symptoms, and some unfortunately with terrible consequences on our health and that of those close to us. In this context, characterized by a very limited sociality, music and culture in general have proved to be essential companions to overcome this moment of loneliness and fear. Music therefore, even if it is currently denied in the proximity offered by clubs and theaters, has fulfilled the task that it has always had from its most archaic and ancient forms, of nurturing the spirit and the synapses. She was able to fill our empty spaces, making the passage of time with ourselves sustainable, making this reality based on the expectation of better times and of freedom tolerable. So during this whole period, I have been thinking about what really manages to feed my imagination and that of people who love music. So I wanted to call my new project “FEED". This band's repertoire was composed between April and September 2020, and reflects a lot of my pre and post lockdown thinking, and a lot of my listening from that time. The piano, double bass and drums formula has always fascinated me since my first listening sessions when I was young. For years, the trios of Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Enrico Pieranunzi, John Taylor, Brad Mehldau, Bobo Stenson have occupied and occupy a privileged place in my discography, and still turn endlessly in my turntable and in my CD player. … But for me as a double bass player, it was not easy to write new piano music without avoiding clichés of the genre, and the urge to repeat the lessons of the great masters appeared regularly every time I transcribed their compositions. to inspire me. So I tried to renew my listening by taking an interest in new music, in particular contemporary music, rock, contemporary jazz, “popular music” and techno. In the last ten years in particular, many pianists have produced, in my opinion, exceptional music for this type of formula, taking as a reference other music than jazz. I am thinking for example of Vijay Iyer, Stefano Battaglia, Craig Taborn, Benoit Delbecq, Christian Wallumrod, Marcin Wasilewsky, The Bad Plus, The Necks. But drummers like Jim Black, Tyshawn Sorey, Dan Weiss have also written very interesting music for trio with the piano. So I looked for a pianist partner who could interpret my new music without marking it with too cumbersome references… I found this pianist in Alessandro Sgobbio, whose style I have always admired, halfway between the experiences of music. contemporary or popular music and those of "Nordic" jazz where he was formed, in Norway. I also wanted to involve a former partner with whom I have played a lot in the past, the French drummer Christophe Marguet, absolutely corresponding to my stylistic preferences and humanly open. We first met 3 years ago. A deep synergy was created between the three of us from the first moments, and we continued to see each other regularly to rehearse. Many concerts have taken place, and from one of them in particular, a historical programmer of France Musique, Xavier Prévost, wrote in September on Jazz Magazine: “This beautiful concert plunged us into a whirlwind of fluctuating emotions. . A great promise for the future of this group, and for the album that we will be impatiently awaiting ”.
