About Franglais [frahn-GLAY]

What happens when Manouche swing in the tradition of Django Rheinhart meets American straight-ahead jazz?

We think we have the answer, and hope that it would have both Django and Duke Ellington dancing in their graves, along with our very alive and well audience.

Franglais—pronounced [frahn-GLAY] is the homecoming of American in Paris back to Brooklyn. Ben Wood

Guitarist and arranger. Ben grew up on the outskirts of D.c. in Silver Spring, Maryland. He Attended Barrie Montesorri School during high school, and earned a Music Performance Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a jazz concentration. After a year he decided to go back to school at Boston's famous Berklee school of music. Music teachers include Mark Mazzatenta, Barry Harris, Charlie Byrd and Stephane Wrembel among others. Eve Seltzer

Vocals. Eve Attended University City High School in St. Louis, Missouri— a school which has produced a lot of jazz talent over the years, including Mary Erlich, Peter Martin, Chris Thomas, and Jeremy Davenport. Although Eve played trombone in the school jazz band, her passion was always singing, which she started doing professionally at the age of eight, in the children's choruses of the St. Louis Symphony and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Eve majored in classical voice in the joint program between the New England Conservatory of Music and Tufts University, before transferring to Columbia in New York.

After college, Eve worked in audio production for over ten years, recording such luminaries as Linda Thompson and Geoff Muldaur. She was sound editor on the American audio editions of books 5 and 6 of Harry Potter, both of which received Grammy nominations. Eve is overjoyed to be back the performance world, and is studying jazz performance with Barry Harris and Miles Griffith. Justin Lees

Lead Guitar. Justin began playing guitar professionally in the late 1970s, studying guitar with several local prominent guitarists in Washington D.C., including Rick Whitehead, Paul Bollenbach, Bill Biesecker, and Danny Gatton, and guitarists not so local, Herb Ellis and Emily Remler among them.

Although stylistically diverse, Justin's main focus is on a straight ahead approach to jazz steeped in the fifties tradition of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and rooted in the styles of Charlie Christian and T Bone Walker. While in Washington D.C. Justin worked as a freelance musician with a variety of people that has included Ron Holloway, Dick Morgan, Keeter Betts, Cindy Cain and others.

Justin is a current student of Howard Alden's and Michele Ramo as well as a past student of Dr. Asher Zlotnik. He has opened for Nina Simone as a member of the Ron Holloway Group at Constitution Hall. Piruz Partow
