Martin Sjöstedt & Stockholm Jazz Orchestra: Horizon

Read "Horizon" reviewed by Neil Duggan

The Stockholm Jazz Orchestra has been together since 1984--40 years at this writing. That is quite an achievement. especially in an age where large ensembles make little financial sense. In 1986, Bob Brookmeyer joined the band as a guest, eventually leading to his compositions featuring on their debut album, Dreams (Dragon, 1988). Subsequently, they have played with artists such as Maria Schneider and The Yellowjackets and undertaken numerous worldwide tours. Operating similarly to a jazz collective, all the ...

Fredrik Lindborg Trio & String Quartet: Riedel

Read "Riedel" reviewed by Ian Patterson

The Riedel of the title is Georg Riedel, the renowned Czech-born, Swedish bassist and composer. Active since the 1950s, Riedel played in the ensembles of Arne Domnérus and Lars Gullin, as well as leading his own combos for decades. But he is perhaps best known for his collaborations with pianist Jan Johansson, particularly the enormously popular Jazz på Svenska (Megafon, 1964), whose jazz take on Swedish folk songs has shifted over a quarter of a million units. Classical music has ...

Fredrik Lindborg: Fredrik Lindborg: A Swedish Portrait

Read "Fredrik Lindborg: A Swedish Portrait" reviewed by Jim Worsley

A time capsule is opened carefully, and its contents are respectively honored and revered. This is the purposeful and respectful sensation revealed on Fredrik Lindborg's faithful homage to the music of Swedish baritone sax legend Lars Gullin. While the arrangements are new, and at times brilliant, the creativity and ambitions of Gullin are richly intact. Lindborg's trio, featuring bassist Martin Sjostedt and drummer Daniel Fredriksson, invigorate with educated conversation while flying high on fiery octane. In unison with ...

LSD: Trio Colossus

Read "Trio Colossus" reviewed by Greg Simmons

The detective is hunched over the bar, alone in a dark smoky dive by the waterfront. A blond saunters in, backlit through the gloom by the neon beer light.“Don't you remember me?" she asks.“Why no," he mumbles, “I've got a metal plate in my head and I drink too much vodka."In the background “It Ain't Necessarily So" oozes from Fredrick Lindborg's tenor saxophone. Lindborg, Sjostedt & Daniel's Trio Colossus wails into the night like ...
