Gabriel Solomon

Violinist Gabriel Solomon made his solo debut with the Calcutta Foundation Orchestra in Calcutta, India, and has appeared as a recitalist in the United States, Canada, and India. He has toured in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and South Africa, and has been heard across Canada on CBC Radio. His repertoire includes works by Webern, Berg, Shostakovich, Cage, Davidovsky and Pärt, and also significant pieces from the viola repertoire, including Feldman's Rothko Chapel, Berio's Folk Songs, Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, and Bartok's Viola Concerto.

Mr. Solomon has been a featured soloist at Brandeis University and MIT. As an orchestral musician, has performed with Opera North, as principal violist of the Lexington Symphony, and with the Vermont and New Hampshire Symphonies. As a chorister, he has performed repertoire including the Tallis motet for 40 voices and the world premiere of the complete "Messe des Pauvres" by Eric Satie. In 1997, Mr. Solomon traveled as a street musician through cities in Europe from Paris to Venice, performing an impromptu solo recital at the Greek Theater in Barcelona.

Mr. Solomon earned a M.Mus and Graduate Performance Diploma from the Longy School of Music, where he studied with Laura Bossert, Peter Cassino, Charlie Banacos, Ben Schwendener, and worked with Dave Bryant on Ornette Coleman's approach of Harmolodics. Mr. Solomon earned a B.Mus from the University of Victoria, Canada, where he studied with members of the Lafayette String Quartet. In 2001, he participated in the new music session of Le Domaine Forget, performing works by Xenakis and Janssen. He has been on the faculty of the Calcutta School of Music, Powers Music School, and the BYSO's Intensive Community Program. He currently maintains a private studio in Lexington, MA.

With pianist Michael McNeill and saxophonist Tsuyoshi Honjo, Mr. Solomon founded Shiki Group, an improvisational trio seeking a new musical language through collaboration and interactive composition. In 2001, he was a founding member of the Mercury Consort, a collective of musicians performing compositions and arrangements of material from Hildegard and John Dowland through Alfred Schnittke and Jaco Pastorius. He has created soundtracks for clients such as the Khan Global Design Visualization Studio, and written and recorded string arrangements for such pop artists as the Jazz Requirement and the Break Mission.
