Giorgio Li Calzi

Giorgio Li Calzi is a trumpeter, composer and music producer, cultural operator. Born in Turin, Italy in 1965, Giorgio started overdubbing piano and synthesizer as a child, and in 1990 he began to study and play the trumpet.

In 1990 Giorgio also won the best European composer award at the Competition for Young Jazz Talents (RAI/Ives St. Laurent), in Rome. Then he began composing music for the theatre and dance performances. He started working for the advertising world and won the 1992 award for best Italian composer, for a FIAT jingle, in Milan.

His first album as trumpet player was released in 1994, and after he has produced other 9 albums until today.

In 2003 he collaborated with Wolfgang Flür, historical member of Kraftwerk, who sampled some tracks from the rough mix of “Sweet home with Elena dancing” (from Giorgio’s “Tech-set” album, out in 2004) and who did “I was a robot”, vinyl single (enclosed in 2015 in the Wolfgang Flür album Eloquence) and title of his autobiography. In 2003 Giorgio collaborated with Lenine, Brazilian singer-songwriter: he recorded voice and guitar in a Giorgio’s cover of Janis Joplin Mercedes Benz. Both Wolfgang Flür and Lenine are guests on Giorgio’s 2004 “Tech-Set” album. In 2007 Giorgio arranged his first work as theatrical-visual director – Giorgio Li Calzi Lectio Organica I: Dracula. In December 2008 he composed a new electronic score to “Aleksandr Nevskij”, the masterpiece by Sergej Ejzenštejn, produced by Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Torino and Russkij Mir Torino.

His album Organum (2011) features Marconi Union, Hayley Alker, Thomas Leer, Douglas Benford aka si-cut.db, Retina.it. Always interested in electronic music, he experiments new electronic sound forms with his trumpet, together with the collective Audio Hacklab, playing with musicians and hackers based in Turin, as Kinetik Laboratories, Pugile, Eniac, Motor.

His last albums out in 2017: Solaris, made together with the cellist Manuel Zigante, and “Music for Writers” produced by Salone Internazione del Libro di Torino (Turin International Book Fair).

He’s the artistic director of the festival CHAMOISic, arranged with Associazione Insieme a Chamois, in Chamois, Matterhorn valley, the only village in Italy reachable by cableway.
