Gordon Hazlewood

Gordon was born in Guyana, where the culture and influences were more Caribbean than South American despite its geographical location. This explains the proliferation in Guyana of the Trinidadian invented and styled steel band or steel drum orchestra. As a young boy he saw the way the steel band was made and borrowed from the tuning process of the large oil drums. He was able to create his first instrument at the age of seven. Through the years he has continued to refine his approach to tuning and mounting the cans to improve tonality and create instruments of differing ranges. These exercises were, until recently, mainly for his own personal entertainment
