Trumpet & Guitars - Elegant And Fantastic Album Release By Gerhard Daum on Tonework Records

Gerhard Daum
Contemporary Jazz is a fascinating collection of seventeen original pieces by German composer and musician Gerhard Daum. A very successful composer of soundtrack music for films and television in both the US and Europe, Daum's music is expressive and often very visual. On this album, Daum performs on trumpet, flugelhorn, and acoustic and electric guitars (not all at the same time!), and is accompanied by prominent Macedonian double-bassist, Martin Gjakonovski, who lives and works in Cologne (Germany). Most of the ...

It's that time of year again, when I introduce you to the newest member of the JazzWax Vintage Holiday Album Hall of Fame. This is the Hall's 13th season. Just think, kids who were born the year I started this feature are now getting their braces removed. Time flies. My choice this year is guitarist Joe Negri's Guitars for Christmas (2003). A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Negri recorded just four albums as a leader, most of them for Pittsburgh's nonprofit ...

Last evening, before New York's July 4th fireworks, I was roaming around YouTube looking at footage of great jazz guitarists. Rather than tell you what I found, why don't I show you [pictured above, from left, are Johnny Guarnieri, Carol Stevens, Barry Galbraith and Milt Hinton in After Hours]... Here are guitarists Jimmy Raney and Scott Henderson in 1993 playing How Deep Is the Ocean?... Here's more than an hour of guitarists Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd and Tal Farlow in ...

French Guitars Unlimited

In 1966, French guitarist Francis Le Maguer formed a quartet of electric guitars known as the Barclay Stars. The group, named for the French Barclay record label, included Le Maguer, Paul Piguillem, Pierre Cullaz, Raymond Gimenes, Victor Apicella and other players at different points and on different album tracks. At times, the group was expanded to a quintet. By my count, the Barclay Stars released three albums in the late 1960s. The group's first album was called Guitars Unlimited, and ...

Last week, when I posted on Tommy Tedesco's 1965 album, The Guitars of Tom Tedesco, I included a print ad I had found for Magnatone amps from 1958. The ad featured five guitarists in a recording studio—Al Hendrickson, Howard Roberts, Bill Pitman, Bob Gibbons and Tommy Tedesco. All five appear on the Four Freshmen and Five Guitars album for Capitol. Except the date in the ad copy is October 1958 while the album with the Four Freshmen wasn't recorded until ...

John Zorn - Masada Guitars (2003)

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski John Zorn's Masada is an interesting group. The way I've come to describe them is Ornette Coleman-listens-to-klezmer." While that's not the only way to get there, it'll do. Pick any recording from the Masada series and you'll hear some fine interplay between Zorn's sax, the trumpet of Dave Douglas and Greg Cohen's bass. All of this supported (and sometimes shattered) by the fricken' exquisite drumming of Joey Baron. So what to make of Masada Guitars? Pretty cool ...
